Publisher's Summary

Having completed the two cycles of legend to which she has devoted her career so far, Anne Rice gives us now her most ambitious and courageous book, a novel about the early years of Christ the Lord, based on the Gospels and on the most respected New Testament scholarship.

The book's power derives from the passion its author brings to the writing and the way in which she summons up the voice, the presence, the words of Jesus who tells the story.

Listen to Anne Rice talk about Christ the Lord on Charlie Rose.

What the Critics Say

"Rice's painstaking historical research is obvious throughout." (Publishers Weekly)
"Riveting....Rice's book is a triumph of tone (her prose lean, lyrical, vivid) and character. As he ponders his staggering responsibility, the boy is fully believable, and yet there's something in his supernatural empathy and blazing intelligence that conveys the wondrousness of a boy like no other." I was unsure about listening to this book about Christ due to the author's previous books.
I loved it and have listened to it twice. Rice has woven history and even some of the gnostic works into this story about the dawning of Christ's awareness of his identity as both God and Man.

After reading some critical reviews by The Christian Research Journal and listening to Anne Rice herself talk about her conversion to Christianity on Focus On The Family, I decided to buy the audiobook. The young voice used read the book aloud was perfect and it reinforced the child-like viewpoint, since that is how the book was written: from Jesus's perspective as a child. There is a lot of 'filling in the blanks' stories that she takes liberty with, but none(*) that is outside of mainstream Christianity.

*She takes a 'Catholic view' on Jesus' brother James (he was from a previous marriage by Joseph vs. a son by both Mary & Joseph) and his mother Mary's eternal virginity (having 'never been with a man' before Jesus's birth or thereafter). Regardless, it is a thought & conversation provoking book! I am really looking forward to listening to, "Out Of Cana" next...

I thoroughly enjoyed this title. It does follow Catholic tradition, though I doubt Protestants would be offended. This Methodist wasn't offended. I was hoping the author might consider a second title, picking up where the first ended.

Sorry, but I can't recommend this book. I found it rambling and dull. I'm not exactly sure what a traditional vampire novelist is doing writing this book.
