Publisher's Summary

Cops are dying. Hunted down while on patrol, they are being murdered while trying to protect the citizens of Miami from this very type of crime. Dominick Falconetti, an agent with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, is charged with heading a task force to investigate. Details at the crime scenes point to a drug connection, and when a highly-placed gang member disappears, it reinforces Dominick's suspicions that these cops were all involved in something unsavory.

C.J. Townsend, the state prosecutor he has loved for the past three years, ever since they met on the infamous Cupid investigation, is getting the calls in the middle of the night as well. As the state attorney who put Florida's last serial killer behind bars, she's the logical choice to help stop this one. But before long, C.J. begins to suspect that she knows an even more terrible secret than Dominick does about why these cops are being murdered.

A tense, gripping crime drama set against the richly detailed background of the Miami legal system and police department, Last Witness is an extraordinary novel.

What the Critics Say

"[Hoffman] combines the gruesome precision of Patricia Cornwell, the courtroom savvy of Linda Fairstein, and the Miami setting of Edna Buchanan to produce an unsettling tale that, unlike most detective fiction, is not neatly tied up at the end." (Publishers Weekly)

The characters are real. Ms. Hoffman's experience as a prosecutor is obvious and very easy to follow. The ending was a little bothersome but I loved it anyway.

tho it began with a gruesome crime, this one seemed to me to begin slowly. like most crime dramas these days, there's liberal use of 4-letter words along with the "J" word and its variations. after a while, tho, the skill of the writing and the narration pulled me in. perhaps it took a while because the plot was more detailed than the characters, but by the end, I was kinda hoping for a continuation (as long as it's narrated by Kathe Mazur), and i'm guessing there will be one.

I loved the first book 'Retribution', I can not say I was quite so keen on this follow up. I found that it dragged at times, and I was rather frustrated by the ending. On balance 10 out of 10 for retribution and 5 out of 10 for this one. I definately wouldnt bother downloading it unless you have read retribution, as I think you will find it hard to like or understand the characters.

The book is interesting but every character is obsessed with using the "F" word. As one who has experience with law enforcement, if my officers used that kind of language that much I would send them to school to learn proper english!!

This book was a huge disappointment. Through an egregious lapse in ethics, events are set in motion which threaten the main character. It is difficult to care for her, however, because she has brought this upon herself. A surprise villan at the end is a clumsy tool to sew up the plot.
