Publisher's Summary

Combining southern warmth with unabashed emotion and side-splitting hilarity, Fannie Flagg takes readers back to Elmwood Springs, Missouri, where the most unlikely and surprising experiences of a high-spirited octogenarian inspire a town to ponder the age-old question: Why are we here?

Life is the strangest thing. One minute, Mrs. Elner Shimfissle is up in her tree, picking figs, and the next thing she knows, she is off on an adventure she never dreamed of, running into people she never in a million years expected to meet. Meanwhile, back home, Elner's nervous, high-strung niece Norma faints and winds up in bed with a cold rag on her head; Elner's neighbor Verbena rushes immediately to the Bible; her truck driver friend, Luther Griggs, runs his 18-wheeler into a ditch, and the entire town is thrown for a loop and left wondering, "What is life all about, anyway?" Except for Tot Whooten, who owns Tot's Tell It Like It Is Beauty Shop. Her main concern is that the end of the world might come before she can collect her social security.

In this comedy-mystery, those near and dear to Elner discover something wonderful: Heaven is actually right here, right now, with people you love, neighbors you help, friendships you keep. Can't Wait to Get to Heaven is proof once more that Fannie Flagg "was put on this earth to write" (Southern Living), spinning tales as sweet and refreshing as iced tea on a summer day, with a little extra kick thrown in.

From AudioFile

Obviously, Elner Shimfissle CAN wait to get to heaven since when the octogenarian falls out of a fig tree and is declared dead, she recovers hours later in the hospital. While in the hospital, Elner makes a visit to heaven, which seems to be managed by her neighbor Dorothy (known to fans of Flagg's novel STANDING IN THE RAINBOW). Meanwhile, in Cassandra Campbell's slight Southern accent, friends and family recall what a blessing Elner has been to them all. The townsfolk have already made their casseroles, ordered flowers, cleaned out Elner's house, and written her obituary by the time the news hits home that she is alive and kicking. I really enjoyed this book. Eleanor is wise senior citizen who teaches others to think about what is valuable in life. Although her wisdom is serious her humor is amusing. I hope her vision of heaven is what we all find when we get to heaven.

I always enjoy a good book, read by a great narrator. I also always enjoy Fannie Flagg. This book just makes you feel good. Entertaining, funny. I read it in hardcover first, then listened just to be able to hear the voice inflection. Again, just a really good listen.

I bought this book because I think Fannie Flagg is so funny and southern, but this book was boring. A cute story about an old southern woman and her family, but not so interesting!!! I listen to alot of good books on audio- not one of them. I wish I hadn't wasted my credits.

I cannot fully express my disappointment with this book. It was not only poorly written, but was absolutely insipid. I felt dumber for listening to it, and can not believe that I listened to the entire book hoping against hope that it was going to improve. Fanny Flagg, her editor, and the publisher should be ashamed of themselves.
