Publisher's Summary

Since the initial publication of Outlander 15 years ago, Diana Gabaldon's New York Times best-selling saga has won the hearts of readers the world over, and sold more than 12 million books. Now, A Breath of Snow and Ashes continues the extraordinary story of 18th-century Scotsman Jamie Fraser and his 20th-century wife, Claire.

The year is 1772, and on the eve of the American Revolution, the long fuse of rebellion has already been lit. Men lie dead in the streets of Boston, and in the backwoods of North Carolina, isolated cabins burn in the forest.

With chaos brewing, the governor calls upon Jamie Fraser to unite the backcountry and safeguard the colony for King and Crown. But from his wife, Jamie knows that three years hence the shot heard round the world will be fired, and the result will be independence, with those loyal to the King either dead or in exile. And there is also the matter of a tiny clipping from The Wilmington Gazette, dated 1776, which reports Jamie's death, along with his kin. For once, he hopes, his time-traveling family may be wrong about the future.

Great Scot! Don't miss the complete Outlander series:
Outlander
Dragonfly in Amber
Voyager
Drums of Autumn
The Fiery Cross
A Breath of Snow and Ashes
An Echo in the Bone

Please note: Even though Recorded Books has produced unabridged editions of both The Fiery Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes, they do not have what's called "digital rights" for those recordings. That means they can sell them in CD format, but they cannot yet distribute them via digital services such as Audible and iTunes. The last time we checked with Diana's agent, his belief was that it could take until sometime next year to resolve the situation. It's wrapped up in contracts and such that have to be untangled. Unfortunately, that's out of our hands. But we keep pushing. Stay tuned!

What the Critics Say

"Triumphant....Her use of historical detail and truly adult love story confirm Gabaldon as a superior writer." (Publishers Weekly)

From AudioFile

The sixth book of the adventures of Claire and Jamie Fraser, set in North Carolina from 1772 through 1777, provides glimpses of the beginnings of the American Revolutionary War and reacquaints us with the extended Fraser clan and friends. Geraldine James enchants the listener with her varied accents, from British and Scots to twentieth-century American and an occasional Irish brogue. Using foreknowledge and their usual survival skills, Claire doctors the hurts and Jamie avenges the wrongs. James's performance brings out the adventurer in the listener. Some pops and skips are audible throughout, adding charm to the narration and the ever complicated plots. This story vibrates with the energy of an America seeking its freedom and the battles that ensue, philosophically and physically, throughout this tumultuous period. (c) AudioFile 2006

I have listened to the first four outlander books in this series, and loved them. However, these books are not meant to be abridged. Diana Gabaldon is way too talented of a writer to have her work chopped into pieces. Plus, the new narrator completely ruined the characters! I am very pleased to see they brought back Davina Porter for the 7th book in the unabridged version, otherwise I would stop listening now!!

First, understand that my rating of this book does not reflect my opinion of the writer's work. It does, however, reflect my displeasure for the abridgement and narration of the book.
I'm a loyal fan of the "Outlander" series and the abridgement cheats the reader of the pleasure of Ms. Gabaldon's work. After listening to the other books in this series, the narration is absolutely inferior. This does not mean the narrator is not good at her work, just not on this piece. Davina Porter does such a good job of bringing the characters to life that listening to any other narrator is painful.
I recommend that you save your credit/money until Audible is able to obtain the unabridged version of this book.

I normally do not buy any abridged books and bought this one not realizing it was abridged. These are great books, and the narrator's fine, even though we're used to Davina Porter. The only thing I don't care for is the way she renders "American" accents, which too many british actors seem to approach by some corsening of the articulation and over-emphasis on most R's.
Most important is that, as others have noted, Gabaldon's books shouldn't be abridged. I would say no books should be abridged, but certainly, much is lost here, as Gabaldon is read for pleasure, and emerging from her novels is only done reluctantly. What's the point in cutting them short?

Even though this is an abridged version it satisfied my need for the continuation.. I am rereading this before I read Echo In the Bone because it has been almost a year since I read it last. I do Prefer Davina Porter but Ms. James does ok...
