Twelve-year-old Natalie has written a fabulous book and is determined to get it published. Luckily, she has connections to the publishing world--her mother is an assistant editor at a major publisher. However, Natalie doesn't want any favors and doesn't want her mom to know that she wrote a novel. So she and her best friend Zoë devise a plan. Natalie uses a pseudonym, Zoë pretends to be an agent, and with a little help from an English teacher, the girls succeed. Not only does Natalie's mom publish the novel, but it exceeds everyone's expectations and becomes a bestseller!©2001 Andrew Clements; (P)2002 Random House, Inc., Listening Library, an imprint of the Random House Audio Publishing Group

What I loved most was the strong, positive female characters. The relationship between the protagonist and her mother felt supportive and realistic, and her best friend? A total firecracker. Watching the dynamic between the quiet friend and the outgoing friend was such a joy—especially seeing how they pushed each other to grow, take risks, and believe in themselves.
The story celebrates creativity, teamwork, and courage in a way that feels accessible and empowering for students. It models healthy friendships and shows how different personalities can work together beautifully.
The School Story is exactly the kind of book I want in my classroom—one that encourages students to speak up, support each other, and realize their ideas matter. A definite win for both readers and teachers.
