"Potrei fare anche la sguattera pur di non fare l'istitutrice in una casa privata" sostiene la protagonista, ripetendo una convinzione già espressa dall'autrice nell'altro suo romanzo, "Shirley". Dunque Lucy, la protagonista, decide di impegnarsi come governante in un pensionato e presto diventa insegnante.
Il romanzo di formazione al femminile segue così una linea già tracciata negli scritti dell'autrice, anche se i sentimenti, le convinzioni, vengono qui espressi più appassionatamente che nel passato.
