While reading psychiatrist Kay Redfield Jamison's groundbreaking account of bipolar disorder, An Unquiet Mind, Sarah Wilson discovered an ancient Chinese proverb that would change her life: To conquer a beast, you must first make it beautiful. Wilson, a best-selling author, journalist, and entrepreneur, had spent years struggling with her own beast: Chronic anxiety. And the words of this proverb would become the key to understanding her condition.

Our bodies, thoughts, minds, and spirits are affected by the whole of nature, and they affect this whole in return. In this time of crisis, how can we best live upon our imperiled, beloved earth? Award-winning writer Lyanda Lynn Haupt’s highly personal new book is a brilliant invitation to live with the earth in both simple and profound ways.

Achievement often comes at a cost. Angst, restlessness, frayed relationships, exhaustion, and even substance abuse can be the unwanted side effects of an obsession with outward performance. Sometimes you slip through the cracks: unforeseen circumstances like an abrupt illness, the death of a loved one, a breakup, or a job loss can derail a life. These periods of dislocation can be lonely and unexpected. For May, her husband fell ill, her son stopped attending school, and her own medical issues led her to leave a demanding job. Wintering explores how she not only endured this painful time, but embraced the singular opportunities it offered. Ultimately Wintering invites us to change how we relate to our own fallow times.

Much of what plagues us—people pleasing, staying in stale relationships, negative habits—all point to what happens when we are out of touch with what truly makes us feel whole.

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

When his mother, Barbara, turns seventy, Jedidiah Jenkins is reminded of a sobering truth: Our parents won’t live forever. But they love thrift stores, they love eating at diners, they love true crime, and they love each other. Jedidiah wants to step into Barbara’s world and get to know her in a way that occasional visits haven’t allowed.

We aren’t born into a self. It is created without our consent, built out of our childhoods, our circumstances, and chance. But in the busyness of adult life, we rarely have time to think clearly about the questions that matter most. Writing with the passion and clarity that made his debut, To Shake the Sleeping Self, a national best seller, Jedidiah Jenkins brings together new and old writings to explore the eight themes all of us face as we find our way in life: ego, family, home, friendship, love, work, death, the soul.

Resumen del Editor
“Sarah Wilson is a force of nature – quite literally. She has taken her pain and grief about our sick and troubled world and alchemized it into action, advocacy, adventure, poetry, and true love.” — ELIZABETH GILBERT
Will you sleep through the revolution? Or do you want to wake up and reclaim your one, wild and precious life? From New York Times bestselling author Sarah Wilson comes a spiritual guidebook for surviving and thriving during challenging times.
Many of us are living with the sense that things are not right with the world, as global problems like the pandemic, the climate crisis, political polarization, and social injustice mount, leaving us in a state of spiritual PTSD. We have retreated, morally and psychologically; we are experiencing a crisis of disconnection—from one another, from our true values, from joy, and from life as we feel we are meant to be living it.
Sarah Wilson argues that this sense of despair and disconnection is ironically what unites us—that deep down, we are all feeling that same itch for a new way of living. This One Wild and Precious Life opens our eyes to how we got here and offers a radically hopeful path forward. Drawing on science, literature, philosophy and the wisdom of some of the world’s leading experts, and her personal journey, Wilson weaves a one-of-a-kind narrative that lights the way back to the life we love. En route, she shows us how to wake up an reconnect with life with “wild practices” that include:
- Hike. Just hike. Great minds throughout history have embraced the “walking cure” and we should do the same.
- Go to your edge. Do what scares you and embrace discomfort daily.
- #Buylesslivemore. Break the cycle of mindless consumption and get light with your life: Ditch your car, stop shopping, and live out of one bag
- Become a soul nerd. Embrace poetry, deep reading, art, and classical music to light up your intellect.
- Get “full-fat spiritual”. How to have an active practice—beyond the “lite” “rainbows and unicorns”—and use it to change the world.
- Practice wild activism. If you can get 3.5 per cent of a population to participate in sustained, non-violent protest, change happens. We create our better world.
The time has come to boldly, wildly, imagine better. We are being called upon, individually and as a society, to forge a new path and to find a new way of living. Will you join the journey?

Shelly Tygielski here shows that mindfulness can also be a powerful tool for spurring transformative collective action. In a winning combination of memoir, manifesto, and how-to, Tygielski shares her evolution from a Jerusalem-born child of traditional Sephardic Orthodox parents to a middle-class American suburban youth who questioned her faith to a young executive in corporate America.

The practice of mindfulness is most often touted for its profound mind, body, and spirit benefits.

Gravity affects every aspect of our physical being, but there’s a psychological force just as powerful - yet almost nobody has heard of it. It’s responsible for bringing groups of people together and pulling them apart, making certain goals attractive to some and not to others, and fueling cycles of anxiety and conflict. In Wanting, Luke Burgis draws on the work of French polymath René Girard to bring this hidden force to light and reveals how it shapes our lives and societies.

Memories are the cornerstones of our identity, shaping who we are, how we act, and how we feel. In his work as a happiness researcher, Meik Wiking has learned that people are happier if they hold a positive, nostalgic view of the past. But how do we make and keep the memories that bring us lasting joy? The Art of Making Memories examines how mental images are made, stored, and recalled in our brains, as well as the "art of letting go" - why we tend to forget certain moments to make room for deeper, more meaningful ones.

But when he shines his light on her, the world makes sense, and Adelaide is convinced that, in his heart, he’s fallen just as deeply as she has. Then, when Rory is rocked by an unexpected tragedy, Adelaide does everything in her power to hold him together.

In his seminal new audiobook, The Disordered Mind, Kandel draws on a lifetime of pathbreaking research and the work of many other leading neuroscientists to take us on an unusual tour of the brain. He confronts one of the most difficult questions we face: How does our mind, our individual sense of self, emerge from the physical matter of the brain?

Must read then act
This book was very well articulated and it’s obvious she cares. I hope we all can rally with her.

A wonderfully well written rally cry for change, Sarah Wilson is so powerful. A must listen or read.

4.5/5. The story we really need for these times.
The only reason it's not a five (hell, I'd give this book 6 stars of I could) Is because the author does contribute a huge section near the end of the books basically being like "oh kids these days, in my day we walked both ways up the hill to school in the snow yada yada yada" and blaming young people for the world's ills is A) overdone B) outdated and C) off the mark. Besides that, this book is truly the answer the questions we're just beginning to understand about how we got to such a fractured world and where we go from here. I'd recommend this book to everyone, especially those concerned with the state of everything and wanting answers.

I got so much out of this book. I learned so much. It inspired me to make shifts in my own life. It also had a lot of depth and emotion.

A lot about her personal life - very long
Perhaps another narrator would be better. Sometimes her pride in herself is just too much to take. There are good points here and there...

Excellent, Inspiring Book!
I want everyone to read this book(or listen to it)! I tend to swing between a state of overwhelm and dispair regarding the environmental craziness and the general state of humanity, and fleeting moments of hopeful inspiration. I have to admit, I often turn away from the problems we face because it is just so exhausting trying to take care of my daily personal responsibilities AND fight for the environment and human rights. The news I'd a horror show, and it all feels like too much. However, in my heart ,I still yearn to save us from the disaster we are on the brink of.
In this book,Sarah creates a clear path forward for us, mixing in moving and engaging personal stories from her life traveling and hiking the world. I can not recommend it highly enough.

A needed book in these difficult times.
An excellent book filled with hope for the future, statistics about waste that contributes to climate change, and practical means for becoming part of the solution. Thanks, Sarah—fantastic read and lovely reading by the author.

The best listen in a long time
I am so soothed and touched to hear the truths laid out so sensitively and tenaciously here. Grateful and moved into more action every day.

Another brain washing book
Another book with the same narrative and agenda that everyone seems to be on since 2020. Started good and quickly went down hill.
To the authors that write these sort of books, please, I do encourage you to practice what you preach, and to live as you preach. And once you have, then re write these sorts of books.
