Utilizing the linguistic insights of her “witty and brilliant” (Blyth Roberson, author of America the Beautiful?) first book Wordslut and the sociological explorations of her breakout hit Cultish, Amanda Montell now turns her erudite eye to the inner workings of the human mind and its biases in her most personal and electrifying work yet. In The Age of Magical Overthinking, Montell argues that in the modern information age, our brain’s coping mechanisms have been overloaded, and our irrationality turned up to an eleven.

What makes “cults” so intriguing and frightening? What makes them powerful? The reason why so many of us binge Manson documentaries by the dozen and fall down rabbit holes researching suburban moms gone QAnon is because we’re looking for a satisfying explanation for what causes people to join - and more importantly, stay in - extreme groups. We secretly want to know: could it happen to me? Amanda Montell’s argument is that, on some level, it already has.

Ponzinomics by Robert L. FitzPatrick, author of False Profits, is the first comprehensive account of how "multi-level marketing" was created in America, escaped criminal and civil prosecution, and spread all over the world. It is the first book to fully explain how the legitimate business of "direct selling" was turned into pyramid recruiting. Ponzinomics reveals how multi-level marketing helped to lay a foundation on Main Street of pervasive deception, financial self-destruction, authoritarian leader-worship, and economic make-believe.

Investigating the historical roots of our peculiar brand of political paranoia, Arthur Goldwag helps us make sense of the senseless and, in so doing, uncovers three uncomfortable truths: that it is older than Trumpism and will outlast it; that theocratic authoritarianism is as hardwired in our American heritage as the principles of the Enlightenment; and that the fear that our system is “rigged” is not altogether unfounded. A probing, surprising, and critical examination of America’s paranoid style, The Politics of Fear sheds new light on the age-old question: What exactly are we so afraid of?

Her subsequent essay, with its scathing commentary about the pervasiveness of misogyny in the food world, would be read millions of times. Publisher's summary
A Next Big Idea Club Must-Read for March 2024 * A Bustle Best New Book of Spring 2024
Peabody and Emmy Award–winning journalist Jane Marie expands on her popular podcast The Dream to expose the scourge of multilevel marketing schemes and how they have profited off the evisceration of the American working class.
We’ve all heard of Amway, Mary Kay, Tupperware, and LuLaRoe, but few know the nefarious way they and countless other multilevel marketing (MLM) companies prey on desperate Americans struggling to make ends meet.
When factories close, stalwart industries shutter, and blue-collar opportunities evaporate, MLMs are there, ready to pounce on the crumbling American Dream. MLMs thrive in rural areas and on military bases, targeting women with promises of being their own boss and millions of dollars in easy income—even at the risk of their entire life savings. But the vast majority—99.7%—of those who join an MLM make no money or lose money, and wind up stuck with inventory they can’t sell to recoup their losses.
Featuring in-depth reporting and intimate research, Selling the Dream reveals how these companies—often owned by political and corporate elites, such as the Devos and the Van Andels families—have made a windfall in profit off of the desperation of the American working class.
Critic reviews
“What a strange and insidious world Jane has chosen to explore and share with us, one that is hiding around every corner of American life.” (Susan Orlean, New York Times bestselling author of The Library Book)
“So, my former intern wrote a book. You're looking at it. I knew nothing about this world and loved learning about it from Jane.” (Ira Glass, host and producer of This American Life)
“Charting the dark underbelly of multilevel marketing isn’t for the faint of heart, but in Jane’s capable hands we’re along for a wild ride. In Selling the Dream her big heart and clear-eyed reporting are on full display.” (W. Kamau Bell, author of The Awkward Thoughts of W. Kamau Bell)

After months of interrogations, he was sent to the US military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, as one of its first prisoners. Like the nearly 800 other men imprisoned at Guantanamo, Adayfi didn’t know why he was imprisoned or for how long. Like the nearly 800 other men imprisoned at Guantanamo, Adayfi didn’t know why he was imprisoned or for how long. He had never seen a skyscraper and couldn’t imagine what the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center looked like, much less how they were destroyed.

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Story
The history of the tablets translated in the following book is strange and beyond the belief of modern scientists. Their antiquity is stupendous, dating back some 36,000 years. The writer is Thoth, an Atlantean Priest-King, who founded a colony in ancient Egypt after the sinking of the mother country. He was the builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza, erroneously attributed to Cheops. In it he incorporated his knowledge of the ancient wisdom and also securely secreted records and instruments of ancient Atlantis.

The core is about the transformation of Manson’s art in the "High End of Low“ era when Manson started to believe that abusing women, cutting them, and painting with their blood is an enlightened form of HIGH ART. On November 29, 1781, Captain Collingwood of the British ship Zong commanded his crew to throw overboard one-third of his cargo: a shipment of Africans bound for slavery in America. The captain believed his ship was off course, and he feared there was not enough drinking water to last until landfall. This book is the first to examine in detail the deplorable killings on the Zong, the lawsuit that ensued, how the murder of 132 slaves affected debates about slavery, and the way we remember the infamous Zong today.

Read this before replying to a „Hey hon“ DM…
This book is an interesting, informative, and engaging listen for anyone who wonders what their friends, family, and former high school classmates have gotten into. All those Facebook friends and Instagram accounts DMing you about essential oils, skincare, nutritional supplements, „buttery“ leggings, press-on fingernails, and the chance to make money while working for yourself? They’re reps for multilevel marketing, aka network marketing aka potential pyramid schemes.
Jane Marie offers an efficient overview of the history of MLMs in the United States, how they work, who they recruit, and the challenges of regulating them. She‘s hard on MLM founders but compassionate towards the many people who get swept up into them based on false promises. Narration is in the personal style that fans of „The Dream“ podcast will enjoy.

Love the podcast, love the book, binged in 2 days no regrets! Hopefully she will keep writing, would love to be taught about every messy topic by Jane Marie.

Kept me wanting more
Great listen and I didn’t want to stop, had to keep the story going. Grateful for the research put in for this book!

Just a small town girl from Michigan warning us all!
Yet another reminder that capitalism is straight up psychopathic. I saw her interview on the Daily Show and I love this woman. I also recommend to download and listen to her podcasts!

So informative
This was such an informative read. I would recommend this book to anyone whom wants to understand more about what the anti mlm movement is for.

Enjoyable
I had already listened to, and very much enjoyed, Jane Marie’s podcast on the same subject so I knew I had to get this book. It was equally interesting and amusing in parts as she’s a great narrator with a good turn of phrase and perfect comic timing.
The book did lag a bit during the telling of some historic detail, but it wasn’t padding, just stuff that had to be told.
Overall, good book! I recommend it :)

Listened in one day
Jane Marie did such a great job writing and reading this book. Similar to her podcast, but so much more in-depth. Wish she had written this 20 years ago when I got sucked into more than one of these schemes. 😆
