A Roma un tranquillo quarantenne che si guadagna da vivere scrivendo libri per ragazzi viene avvicinato da uno strano tassista, che lo convince ad ascoltare una rivelazione "pazzesca": suo padre, morto da poco, non sarebbe stato il generale democristiano e bigotto che lui aveva sempre creduto, ma una spia russa al servizio del KGB. Da questo momento lo scudo protettivo che il protagonista aveva tenacemente costruito attorno a sé e alla sua famiglia comincia a sgretolarsi.
