Publisher's summary

Read by the author.

A purposeful guide for 20- and 30-somethings to understand and embrace their calling as well as immediate next steps for their lives.

You've heard people say, "Who you are matters more than what you do." But does the Bible really teach that?

In Garden City, popular pastor and speaker John Mark Comer gives a surprisingly countercultural take on the typical "spiritual" answer of the church. Comer explores Scripture to discover God's original intent for how we are meant to spend our time, reshaping how you view and do your work, rest, and life.

Here, you'll find answers to questions like:

  • Does God care where I work?
  • Does he have a clear direction for me?
  • What about what I do with my free time or how much rest I get?

In this book, you'll learn that it's ultimately about the reality that what we do matters, just as much as who we are.

Refreshing!

Such a great book for those who sometimes feel as though you trudge through the mundane tasks of work. I’m grateful for the refreshing perspective the author provides to understand my role as a worker and laborer in this world. Turns out the word “work” is not a four-letter word.

Worth the read

I have come to really appreciate John‘s writing. This is the second book of his that I’ve gone through and I thought he did another fantastic job. I don’t agree 100% with everything he says, but I respect that on the things that are opinion, he states that, I very much respect his openness and honesty. This has helped me a lot with my own outlook when it comes to my job and how I go about it and think about it. It has helped work the more enjoyable and helped me in my ministry at work.

Bring God to work day

Plenty of books discuss the practical part of work and jobs. Few mention the spiritual aspect. The ideas about a “calling” and the need for everyone’s skills was inspiring. Whatever you do, do the best you can and bring God into it. This book changed how I think about work.
It’s almost like you could read this book, and THEN go to something like Mel Robbins for practical step by step advice.
Usually I can’t stand books read by the author, but John Mark Comer is an excellent narrator. Probably because he’s, you know, a pastor and all.

Simple but important message

If you want to be reminded why doing what you do for the Lord and also doing what you love for the Lord is Kingdom building, listen to this book.

It’s quirky and funny but it’s serious and important.

Such a beautiful take on work

I think this book is great for any believer to read —but especially the new high school grads questioning careers and their future. Or anyone like me with job burnout. This book presents such a great opportunity for refocus on the “why?” of our work. And helps us realize all work is ministry. We just have to let God use us.
