Publisher's summary

A riveting account of the lives and epic battles of eight Western defenders against violent Islamic jihad that sheds much-needed light on the enduring conflict with radical Islam

In Defenders of the West, the author of Sword and Scimitar follows up with vivid and dramatic profiles of eight extraordinary warriors—some saints, some sinners—who defended the Christian West against Islamic invasions.

Discover the real Count Dracula, Spain’s El Cid, England’s Richard Lionheart, and many other historical figures whose true and original claim to fame revolved around their defiant stance against jihadist aggression. An instructive and inspiring listen; whereas Sword and Scimitar revolved around decisive battles, Defenders of the West revolves around decisive men.

Real history for the non-revisionists

Wow. What a breath of fresh air. This is actually real, unapologetic history of the crusades here. Or rather, noted standouts who have stood the test of time. Raymond Ibrahim is a man who makes no apologies God bless him. He’s one in a billion today. We need more writers and historians like him. This book will have history buffs who long for the unadulterated truth cheering.

Solid book, great stories, excellent narration

This book was a well done scholarly character study of several leaders of the Middle ages that defended western civilization from jihadist Islam. The book uses credible primary source material and addresses post-modern "scholars" that try to corrupt the histories of these great men. The narrator is by far one of the best I've heard on audible.

Incredible men brought to life

This book is amazing. It will bring to life the lives of great men of the past that public educators, either know nothing about or purposely tell you nothing about.

A much needed take on history.

While academic in nature, the history recounted is moving and refreshing to hear in the modern era.

the crusades we never learned about in school

this book fundamentally changed my view of the crusades from that which I learned in school. it should be on everyone's read list going into 2024.

may God raise up more Godfreys, Skanderbegs, and Vlads.

Should be Mandatory Reading in the West's Schools

This was an absolutely incredible book. It sets the record straight that has been distorted by those that hate the West & Christianity. The Crusades were not implemented for glory against peaceful Muslims. The Crusades were necessary because Muslims were killing & selling Christian Pilgrims to the Holy into slavery. This book tells the story of the hero's that led the various Crusades & the reasons they felt called to action. This is our history in the West & we should know it.

Fantastic overview!

Really enjoyed listening to this audiobook. Ibrahim does such a good job of bringing to the modern light history not discussed in society or school. If any of these historical figures are discussed, the running societal themes are seemingly intentionally misleading. So glad Ibrahim uses his abilities and position to put these figures in proper context. Great complement to Sword and Scimitar, too.

Western Heroes

I loved the unapologetic story of what has actually being going down throughout history between Islam and the West. We definitely need more heroes like these in the Western World today.

Stories that read like movies.

More than half of the figures profiled in this book are men of whom I had never heard before. Thanks to this work, I have a basic knowledge of the lives and accomplishments of some of the most remarkable men in history. I particularly like that the author uses source materials from both Christian and Muslim contemporaries. This book is a great companion to “Sword and Scimitar,” which I was glad to have read before this book.
