Publisher's summary
Dahlia has spent her life running from a monster, only to fall into another's path.
It's been ten years since she escaped the darkness. Ten years spent hiding her magic in a kingdom where magic is outlawed. Despite neglecting that side of herself, Dahlia is happy with the life she's built in Cambriel. Not only is she on the fast track to becoming a royal scholar, but the love of her life, Prince Aiden, is finally returning her long-held affections.
However, the infuriating royal assassin, Ryken, shadows her every move. He's always watching and waiting to catch a glimpse of whatever makes her tick. In his relentless quest to figure her out, Ryken uncovers Dahlia's darkest secret—and he's not above using blackmail to get what he wants.
Dahlia will do anything to keep her secret, even if it requires getting close to the mysterious assassin. Because if the truth is revealed, everyone she loves will pay a deadly price.
And that price is delivered by the hands of a monster.
A Tale of Treachery is a dark fantasy romance with fae, witches, and morally gray characters who will stop at nothing to get what they want. Intended for mature listeners.

Have you ever lost yourself in a fantasy world you created? That's how I've survived the years alone in a reality where humans cower in fear of supernatural creatures hiding behind the veil. All I've ever had is my pen, my notebook, and the world I created to make it through the days as a ward of the state, suffering at the hands of the real villains of the world—humans. The pages of my notebook hold three sinful, feared monsters. Ones that I certainly shouldn't be pining over since they aren't even real.

I was born with a curse that spun a violent storm around me, seizing every beautiful and fragile thing that flittered into my life, tearing it all from my grasp as effortlessly as the wings of a butterfly are torn from its body. Or so I thought, anyway. It all changed when they came for me, when they dragged me to trial for my crimes. I should have faced execution, but fate is a fickle and funny thing, taunting me with the knowledge that I was always destined to be so much more.

We only manage to find it with the help of a sexy gas station owner who offers to come for me if I call him. Swoon. I quickly learn that Shepherd isn't actually human; nobody in town is. It is said that the Neverseen King comes for a bride every hundred years. I thought it was only legend—until he came for me. I am one of twelve assassins forced to compete for the hand of our unseen king, who I'm beginning to doubt is even human at all. Why he needs a bride, much less one who wields a blade isn't any of my business. All I'm trying to do is get out of here with my life and my heart intact. I don't want to care about the mysteries I begin uncovering about the king, about why he never shows his face, about his palace that turns into a nightmare after dusk.

There is a curse on his blood, an ailment that, if revealed, could destroy his kingdom. The only one who can help him is me, a human with average healing abilities. It's what the Envoy told him, and her word is law. I'm his only hope. He sends his blue-blooded friends to kidnap me so I can join their quest to Mount Ruin, the only place where I can heal him. The path is terrifying, and the prince is lying, hiding things from me. To make matters worse, he isn't always nice. When 80% of the population is gifted with touch magic, it’s best to keep your hands—and your lips—to yourself. Especially if you’re an ungifted serf like I am. The problem is, the most dangerous guy at Gifted Fae Academy is the one I want to touch more than anything, even as I draw the attention of the school’s most gorgeous Apprentice Fae. When my entry exam leads to the revelation that I may not be as Ungifted as I previously believed… well… surviving until graduation might prove harder than I thought—particularly when a certain fatal touch may be worth the risk.

Knox Ashcroft. One of the so-called gods of Hatherley Hall. He's everything I despise—a spoiled, arrogant, lacrosse-playing rich boy. From the moment we met, he made it clear that the loathing was mutual. I don't belong in his world, and he wants me gone. Too bad for him. I'm not leaving until I get what I came for. Everyone has skeletons in the closet, right? I'll uncover his. I just have to make sure he doesn't discover mine.
