En 1613 sale de Japón una expedición insólita de veintidós samuráis con rumbo a España. Después de un año de viaje por fin llegan a Sanlúcar de Barrameda para cumplir su misión organizada por el Shogun de Japón: entablar relaciones comerciales con España y sus colonias a cambio de extender su vinculo al mundo católico. Son recibidos por el Séptimo Duque de Medina Sidonia. Shiro, uno de los guerreros japoneses, acaba enamorándose de una aristócrata sevillana que se llama Guada. Ella le corresponde y a pesar de los tabúes sociales y las enormes diferencias culturales consiguen estar juntos. Guada se queda embarazada y trágicamente muere en el parto de su hija, Soledad.
La hija del samurái de Sevilla es la autobiografía de Soledad, su extraordinaria historia contada por ella misma. También es la continuación de la historia de su padre, el protagonista de El Samurái de Sevilla. A Soledad le tocará vivir a caballo, o mejor dicho, a barco, entre Asia y Europa, y dos culturas que son suyas pero que no encajan fácilmente. Es de ascendencia irlandesa e hijo de un diputado demócrata del Congreso de los EE. UU. De joven visita España por primera vez y se enamora de Andalucía. Vive varios años en las Alpujarras y estudia medicina en Granada. En 1982 cambia de rumbo y trabaja en el mundo del cine colaborando con directores como Víctor Erice, Woody Allen, John Huston, Elaine May y Arthur Hiller.
En 1998 dirige su primer documental: Federico García Lorca: retrato de familia. En 2010 vuelve a combinar sus pasiones por el cine y la literatura y dirige The Practice of the Wild, un documental que retrata la amistad entre el poeta Gary Snyder y el novelista Jim Harrison. Esta película se estrena en el Festival Lumière en Lyon, y en España en La Casa Encendida. Entre 2002 y 2011, Healey es director de la Fundación Rey Juan Carlos I de New York University en Madrid. En el 2013, se publica su primera novela Emily & Herman, una historia de amor entre Herman Melville y Emily Dickinson. En 2016/2017 El samurái de Sevilla se publica en España y en otros países, entre ellos ee. uu., Alemania y Holanda. La hija del samurái de Sevilla, fue publicada en EE. UU. en 2019 y en Alemania en el 2020.
