Historia
We live in a world obsessed with drinking. We drink at baby showers and work events, brunch and book club, graduations and funerals. Yet no one ever questions alcohol’s ubiquity—in fact, the only thing ever questioned is why someone doesn’t drink. It is a qualifier for belonging and if you don’t imbibe, you are considered an anomaly. As a society, we are obsessed with health and wellness, yet we uphold alcohol as some kind of magic elixir, though it is anything but.

What could possibly be “lucky” about addiction? Absolutely nothing, thought Laura McKowen when drinking brought her to her knees. As she puts it, she “kicked and screamed . . . wishing for something - anything - else” to be her issue. The people who got to drink normally, she thought, were so damn lucky. But in the midst of early sobriety, when no longer able to anesthetize her pain and anxiety, she realized that she was actually the lucky one. Lucky to feel her feelings, live honestly, really be with her daughter, change her legacy.

In Push Off from Here, McKowen delves deeply into each of her nine points: what they mean, how they work, and how every person can live them. She addresses topics such as the correlation between trauma and addiction, the importance of radical honesty, letting go of the illusion of control, the value of community, a reminder that healing is a continual process, and that the process is a gift. Whether you’re just starting out or have been sober for decades, McKowen instructs us to be kind to ourselves: Change is messy and progress is rarely linear, but we can always push off from here.

Resumen del Editor
Alcohol Explained is the definitive, ground-breaking guide to alcohol and alcoholism. It explains how alcohol affects human beings on a chemical, physiological, and psychological level, from those first drinks right up to chronic alcoholism. Alcoholism and problem drinking seems illogical to those on the outside; indeed, it is equally perplexing for the alcoholic or problem drinker. This audiobook provides a logical, easy-to-follow explanation of the phenomenon and detailed instructions on how to beat it. Despite being entirely scientific and factual in nature, the audiobook is presented in an accessible and easily understandable format.
For more information and to read the first five chapters for free, please visit www.alcoholexplained.com.
"This is an excellent book written by an inquisitive and educated author who during a period of his life suffered from alcoholism. The book explains in an easily understood language the various effects that alcohol has on our body. In my opinion the text would serve as a great handbook not only for those struggling with alcohol but also medical students as part of their education. I am sure some of my own patients troubled with alcoholism in recent years could have benefited from reading William’s book and I will be recommending it going forward." - Håvard Molvik, MD, MRCS, MSc, MRCGP

The psychiatric establishment and rehab industry in the Western world have branded addiction a brain disease based on evidence that brains change with drug use. But in The Biology of Desire, cognitive neuroscientist and former addict Marc Lewis makes a convincing case that addiction is not a disease and shows why the disease model has become an obstacle to healing. Lewis reveals addiction as an unintended consequence of the brain doing what it's supposed to do - seek pleasure and relief - in a world that's not cooperating.

Yet no one ever questions alcohol’s ubiquity—in fact, the only thing ever questioned is why someone doesn’t drink. It is a qualifier for belonging and if you don’t imbibe, you are considered an anomaly. A must read for everyone.
Drinker or not, we as a society are bombarded every single day with the false reality of Alcohol. It's portrayed as the Elixir of Life in books, TV, ads and so on. This book strips away the myth and takes a real look under the hood, and inside our bodies, to uncover the truth about alcohol. It's really too bad that probably only problem drinkers will find this book. All over the world people are choosing to make life changes to become a healthier version of themselves, denying this food or that, but yet still consuming poison on a daily basis. Most think the worst a drink can do is the day after... you must read this book!

Alcohol TOTALLY explained
William Porter is exceptionally clear and relatable during these many chapters. Anyone who has struggled with all or even parts of what he talks of know, somehow these assertions are true. The most important part for me is the way he helps me wrap my head around all this, turn around and face this evil with a smile, not fear that I will fail, but armed with the attitude to see drinking for what it never was - my friend! I love this and am going to buy it in paper, so I can look at it in print.
Try this. You will find the attitude you need. Attitude is everything.

Life changing!
I have read most self help books on alcohol addiction. Some helped a little, others not at all.
This book made me understand completely how alcohol addiction works without using repetitive catch phrases or approaching the subject as if I was a child. I don’t believe I will ever touch alcohol again after listening to it on audiobook. Simply life changing!

Simply Amazing
I have always had so many questions about why I had a problem just having one drink. It all makes so much sense now. I have decided alcohol is poison and there is zero benefits to it. I am excited for a new chapter in my life. One without guilt or shame.

I have read MANY books about understanding drinking and this is by far the best and most hopeful book I have read on this topic.

Very to the point
Really great and informative book. May be it will not stop me from having that cold beer once in a while but it does help a lot in understanding the effects and the addiction to alcohol. Special thanks to the narrator, very clear pronunciation and nice tempo.
