Historia
In the spring of 1983, massive flooding along the length of the Colorado River confronted a team of engineers at the Glen Canyon Dam with an unprecedented emergency that may have resulted in the most catastrophic dam failure in history. In the midst of this crisis, the decision to launch a small wooden dory named “The Emerald Mile” at the head of the Grand Canyon, just fifteen miles downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam, seemed not just odd, but downright suicidal.

Sailing by yourself, out of sight of land, can be invigorating and terrifying, compelling and tedious—and sometimes all of the above in one morning. But it is also a wide expanse of time in which to think. Sailing Alone tells the story of some of the remarkable people who, over the last four centuries, have spent weeks and months, moving slowly over the world's largest laboratory: a capricious and startling place in which to observe oneself, the weather, the stars, and countless sea creatures, from the tiniest to the most massive and threatening.

Glen Van Peski helped revolutionize backpacking by creating ultralight equipment, which allows people to take less so they can do more in the wilderness. During decades of championing ultralight backpacking, Glen became aware that “take less, do more” is more than just a hiking slogan.

On July 12th, 1776, Captain James Cook, already lionized as the greatest explorer in British history, set off on his third voyage in his ship the HMS Resolution. Two-and-a-half years later, on a beach on the island of Hawaii, Cook was killed in a conflict with native Hawaiians. How did Cook, who was unique among captains for his respect for Indigenous peoples and cultures, come to that fatal moment? Hampton Sides’ bravura account of Cook’s last journey both wrestles with Cook’s legacy and provides a thrilling narrative of the titanic efforts and continual danger that characterized exploration.

On January 28, 1986, just seventy-three seconds into flight, the space shuttle Challenger broke apart over the Atlantic Ocean, killing all seven people on board. Millions of Americans witnessed the tragic deaths of the crew, which included New Hampshire schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe. Like the assassination of JFK, the Challenger disaster is a defining moment in twentieth-century history—one that forever changed the way America thought of itself and its optimistic view of the future. Yet the full story of what happened, and why, has never been told.

On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

On January 20, 2003, a thunderous crack rang out and a 100-foot-wide tide of snow barreled down the Northern Selkirk Mountains in British Columbia, Canada. More than a dozen skiers and snowboarders were thrust down the mountain, buried beneath several tons of rock-hard snow and ice in the Durrand Glacier Avalanche. A heroic search and rescue ensued. Among those buried was Craig Kelly—“the Michael Jordan of snowboarding”—a man who had propelled the sport into the mainstream before walking away from competitions, to rekindle his passion in the untamed alpine wilds of North America

John Wesley Powell’s first descent of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon in 1869 counts among the most dramatic chapters in American exploration history. When the Canyon spit out the surviving members of the expedition - starving, battered, and nearly naked - they had accomplished what others thought impossible and finished the exploration of continental America that Lewis and Clark had begun almost 70 years before.

As a park ranger with the National Park Service's law enforcement team, Andrea Lankford led search and rescue missions in some of the most beautiful (and dangerous) landscapes across America, from Yosemite to the Grand Canyon. But though she had the support of the agency, Andrea grew frustrated with the service's bureaucratic idiosyncrasies, and left the force after twelve years. Two decades later, however, she stumbles across a mystery that pulls her right back where she left off: three young men have vanished from the Pacific Crest Trail.

Resumen del Editor
From the author of the beloved bestseller The Emerald Mile comes a rollicking and poignant account of the epic misadventure of two friends, zero preparation, and one dream: a 750-mile odyssey, on foot, through the heart of America’s most magnificent national park and the grandest wilderness on earth.
A few years after quitting his job to follow an ill-advised dream of becoming a guide on the Colorado River, Kevin Fedarko was approached by his best friend, the National Geographic photographer Pete McBride, with a vision as bold as it was harebrained. Together, they would embark on an end-to-end traverse of the Grand Canyon, a journey that, McBride promised, would be “a walk in the park.” Against his better judgment, Fedarko agreed to the scheme, unaware that the small cluster of experts who had completed the crossing billed it as “the toughest hike in the world.”
The ensuing ordeal, which lasted more than a year, revealed a place that was deeper, richer, and far more complex than anything the two men had imagined—and came within a hair’s breadth of killing them both. They struggled to make their way through the all but impenetrable reaches of its truest wilderness, a vertical labyrinth of thousand-foot cliffs and crumbling ledges where water is measured out by the teaspoon and every step is fraught with peril—and where, even today, there is still no trail along the length of the country’s best-known and most iconic park.
Along the way, veteran long-distance hikers ushered them into secret pockets, invisible to the millions of tourists gathered on the rim, where only a handful of humans have ever laid eyes. Members of the canyon’s eleven Native American tribes brought them face-to-face with layers of history that forced them to reconsider myths at the center of our national parks—and exposed them to the impinging threats of commercial tourism. Even Fedarko’s dying father, who had first pointed him toward the canyon more than forty years earlier but had never set foot there himself, opened him to a new way of seeing the landscape.
And always, there was the great gorge itself: austere and unforgiving but suffused with magic, drenched in wonder, and redeemed by its own transcendent beauty.
A Walk in the Park is a singular portrait of a sublime place, and a deeply moving plea for the preservation of America’s greatest natural treasure.

The “mountain men” were the hunters and trappers who fiercely strode the Rocky Mountains in the early to mid-1800s. They braved the elements in search of the skins of beavers and other wild animals, to sell or barter for goods. The lifestyle of the mountain men could be harsh, existing as they did among animals, and spending most of their days and nights living and camping out in the great unexplored wilds of the Rockies.

Historia
The “mountain men” were the hunters and trappers who fiercely strode the Rocky Mountains in the early to mid-1800s. They braved the elements in search of the skins of beavers and other wild animals, to sell or barter for goods. The lifestyle of the mountain men could be harsh, existing as they did among animals, and spending most of their days and nights living and camping out in the great unexplored wilds of the Rockies.

MacLeod and her husband, George, encountered their dream while vacationing on a remote island in the Scottish Hebrides. Enthralled by its windswept beauty, they soon were the proud and startled owners of a near-derelict croft house - a farmer’s stone cottage - on “a small acre” of land. Everyone believes Adam to be something he’s not. Sometimes that’s because he’s told them a story. Sometimes he’s told himself one. But when Adam joins an Alaskan fishing crew that’s promising quick money, the dangerous work and harsh lifestyle strip away all fabrications and force a dark-hearted exploration of who he really is. On the unforgiving Bering Sea, Adam finds the adventure and authenticity of a fisherman’s life revelatory. The labor required to seize bounty from the ocean invigorates him, and the often crude comradery accompanies a welcome, hard-earned wisdom.

Bomb Tokyo. On April 18, 1942, sixteen B-25s, known as the Doolittle Raiders, hit targets across Japan before escaping to China. The eighth plane, however, did not follow the other raiders. Instead, Plane 8's pilots, Captain Edward "Ski" York and Lieutenant Bob Emmens, never attacked Tokyo, but headed across Japan to the Soviet Union, supposedly due to low fuel.

Captivating, genuine and forever unique
99.9% of us will never be able to accomplish what Kevin and Pete did by not only completing the 'hike' but writing the definitive book on the insides of the canyon. So glad he wrote such a book and that I came across it on Audible.

Great combination of adventure and backstory of the canyon and the forces that surround it.

A grand adventure
I was so excited to see this book had finally been published! I read the National Geographic articles about their trek back in 2016. I have hiked to the river and back multiple times over the years on some of the less crowded trails and the Escalante route. The author’s vivid descriptions take me back to this incredible place and help me picture what it would be like to go off trail. He weaves in the geology, human history and modern politics of the canyon to an incredible adventure story. His self-deprecating humor and appreciation of the experienced hikers who made the trek possible are best narrated in his own voice. Makes me so stoked to be going back this fall on a thru hike of the AZT!

More than an adventure story
When I first began this book I thought, oh no, this is another book about how inexperienced, incompetent hikers learned backcountry skills through misery and but eventually came to love the trail. These are themes that do run through the volume, but in the end they are only a small part of the book. For me the best parts were the actual hikes—where the two went, who went with them, how they pulled them off—as well as the sections on the history of the canyon—its geology, the native tribes who lived there and their history with the Forest Service, earlier forays into the area by boaters and hikers, present-day threats to the canyon, and the camaraderie among the small group of those who hike the canyon off trail. This book is much more interesting than originally promised.

Thorougly appreciated and enjoyed the book
A rotating mix of backcountry descriptions, stories of challenges encountered and historical perspectives kept the book engaging and fresh. Mr. Fedarko's humility kept the book grounded in reality. I wish I was hiking in the Grand Canyon right now.
I also very much appreciated hearing the author read his own work. He is an excellent and skilled narrator. Dialogue is a very small portion of the book. His attempts to sound like the other people is his book didn't always work out so well. His best friend sounded like a 20-year-old skateboarder/pothead--which I am sure he wasn't.
I'm definitely recommending this book to a few friends.

Beautiful Presentation
The author does an amazing job explaining his journey with its ups and downs but also includes great history, art, culture, geology, stories and more from a variety of sources and honors the legacy, history and heritage of the Indigenous Peoples whose land it is.

Descriptive and generous hearted
At first I was worried that this would just be a Grand Canyon version of Bill Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods but it turned out to be much more. Brilliantly descriptive, often funny and sometimes heart breaking. It allows those of us who could never venture where the author did see , feel and ultimately love the remote and brutal places of the Grand Canyon. I listened to the Audible Version and the author narrated. He did an excellent job. I know I will return to this recording again and again when I need to experience some vicarious adventure and wonder.

Loved it
An excellent entry in the “fool goes hiking” genre. Zooming in and out between the personal and the grand, Fedarko has done an amazing job evoking the canyon country and its peoples with care and vigor. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Adventure, natural world, candor
Love this book. Always great when author reads their own book, this is no exception. Just love the whole adventure, including the author's candor.

I so wanted to love this book but I just couldn’t.
I just got back from the Grand Canyon and I love non-fiction - especially accounts of adventures, which this story certainly is. The subject is right up my alley as is the genre. However (and for me, it’s a big one), the book is so over-written. Why use a familiar word when you can cram in lots of words that show off your vocabulary? Why use ten words when you can use 100? I really don’t know what the author was thinking but it seemed like literary boasting to me, like he’s saying, I will make my account as intellectual as possible to show you just how smart I am and far I had to stoop to actually go on this journey.
I seldom bail on a book but I did on this one, I wanted a fun romp and I got a plodding haul. Sure that haul is through one of the most beautiful places on earth but if the language is so overdone and high-falutin’ that the story no longer seems accessible, what’s the point?
