totally enjoyed this

this ol boy just gets it. the characters are awesome and real. the story flows perfectly in and out of the mystery to nostalgic regret in a way that is totally relatable. had me guessing til the end and when i thought i had it solved i was wrong again. love that! combine that with the voice of the immortal angus king and you have one hell of a listen on your hands. thank jm.

Great storytelling

At first it was difficult to understand the dialect but I gave it time and I caught on. This is a super detective story with interesting characters. Deeply hidden secrets come to play and change the trajectory of the story. Good start for a series.

Excellent beginning to a new series

Am new to this author and plan to read more of his books. This one was very good....great setting and characters. Held my interest throughout.

A Great Start to An Intriguing Series

Initially, what sold me on this title was the narration of Angus King and the story summary. It absolutely did not disappoint (Mr. King absolutely never does, mind, so that was a given). The characters are vivid -- the protagonist is flawed, brilliant, irreverent, and clearly a good man; and the Island itself is also brought to life behind the drama and mystery. The story is not "action-packed" (it would be difficult to imagine any long-cold case unfolding in a way that leant itself to being so), but the mysteries unfold through character conversation and interactions, all pushed forward by the determined DI and the workings of his irascible DS. The resolution was well sculpted, surprising, and very satisfying in the context of the world the author builds. I am excited for the next installment.

I completely enjoyed this new series and can’t wait for the next in line. And, of course, having Angus King as narrator made it perfect

Terrific Find

I’m a big fan of detective/mystery fiction and came upon this book quite by accident. Great book! Started slow but once I got into the story I was hooked. Excellently read by the narrator. Beautifully written with a great plot and good relationships between the characters. I can’t wait till my next credit so I can listen to the next in the series.

Take JM Dalgliesh, add Angus King as narrator and a winner is guaranteed.

I was already a J M Dalgliesh fan - excited for the start of a new series and intrigued with his move from England to Scotland. This book did not disappoint. A Long Time Dead has a gripping plot, a beautiful, rather isolated setting, and engaging characters. I’m looking forward to learning more about the characters and the culture in future books.

Angus King is one of the best narrators all around, but the absolute best for books set in Scotland. I am so glad they went with him for this book/series.

This book is much like the Dark Yorky series, excellent

The book was a slow start much like the first series I read by this author. But I will say stick with it for it gets better as it goes on. The book is written as if it will be the first of many in this new series. The main character is flawed but very likeable and the series looks to be another good one. This book had an ending which took many turns to get to and was unexpected. I like books that surprise me with the plot and this did not disappoint. I highly recommend this read.
