Story
It's been said that all great literature boils down to one of two stories—a man takes a journey, or a stranger comes to town. While mystery writers have been successfully using both approaches for generations, there's something undeniably alluring in the nature of a stranger: the uninvited guest, the unacquainted neighbor, the fish out of water. In the newest collection of stories by the Mystery Writers of America, each author weaves a fresh tale surrounding the eerie feeling that comes when a stranger enters our midst, featuring stories by prolific mystery writers.

Publisher's summary
This is the remarkable debut mystery from the winner of the 2003 St. Martin’s Press/Private Eye Writers of America Prize for Best First Private Eye Novel.
Investigator Wayne Weston is found dead of an apparent suicide in his home in an upscale Cleveland suburb, and his wife and six-year-old daughter are missing. Weston’s father insists that private investigators Lincoln Perry and Joe Pritchard take the case to exonerate his son and find his granddaughter and daughter-in-law. As they begin to work, they discover there is much more to the situation than has been described in the prevalent media reports. There are rumors of gambling debts and extortion, and a group of Russians with ties to organized crime who don’t appreciate being investigated—a point they make clear with baseball bats.
With some assistance from newspaper reporter Amy Ambrose, Perry and Pritchard believe they are making swift progress. But then they are warned off the investigation by a millionaire real estate tycoon and the FBI. Just when they feel they are closing in on a possible source of answers, another murder forces them to change direction in the case.

Story
In The Worst of You, just-wed architects Timo and Nia flee a murder scene, setting in motion a chain reaction of lies and betrayals that threaten to unravel everything they have built together. Twisted and propulsive, this thriller is told from the alternating perspectives of the couple and those close to them on Williwaw Island, each with their own motive to use the outcome of the murder case to their advantage. When a huge storm sweeps up the coast, trapping everyone on tiny Williwaw Island, it’s a race against time—and the elements — to stop the murderer from striking again.

Story
It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

Fancy cars, designer clothes, and daily salon appointments aren’t nearly enough to keep them fulfilled and happy. Because in this town, privilege and opulence go hand in hand with betrayal and revenge. Jenny, the owner of Glow, an exclusive membership-only beauty salon, knows that better than anyone, because she knows everything about these housewives—down to each individual strand of hair.

Good Crime Fiction
I saw Michael Koryta at the Decatur Book Festival earlier this year, he made a good impression and I decided to give one of his novels a try. Best place to start is always this beginning. This is his first book and also the first book int he Lincoln Perry series. I liked it. He did a talk with Michael Connelly so I was expecting the book to be a bit like the Harry Bosch novels and it was to a point. I think these were a bit grittier and more "Dragnet" style than Harry Bosch is. I thought the mystery was really good and it had a couple of twists in it that I didn't expect it.
Scott Brick did a decent job narrating the book. He's not my favorite narrator but he's not bad.
If you're fan of procedural crime novels with a bit of a dark side, I recommend this series. I will definitely be reading more Koryta in the future.

Anything scott Brick reads sounds great
Two gritty smart former policemen, one old and one young, lead us through the twists and turns of a guns and lust detective story. Loyalty and honesty come out on the winning side. Worth a read. If you like Clive Cussler you’ll like this

brick weighs the story down
Scott Brick can be brilliant, but sometimes he becomes the William Shatner of audio--over-emoting all over the place. I'm afraid this is one is a Shatner. The story is compelling, and maybe the repartee between the two PIs is enjoyable, but Brick does not make it so. In addition, everyone in the story speaks in Brick's idosyncratic cadence, which gets old. The story gets a four, but the reading gets a two.

Interesting mystery and great characters.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
for sure.
What did you like best about this story?
I totally enjoy the laid back style and character interpretation that Scott Brick delivers. I don't understand the negative comments. Scott totally becomes the characters and this one had me hooked from the beginning
Which scene was your favorite?
There were a couple of good ones, but no spoilers, so I'll keep them to myself.
Any additional comments?
