Editorial reviews
This full-cast production of the first book in Bruce Coville's Magic Shop series coincides with the re-release of these books in new hardcover editions. As narrator, Coville's voice is infused with mystery and fun as he tells the story of Russell Crannaker, a shy boy plagued by the class bully until the day he stumbles on Mr. Elives's magic shop and buys the monster's ring, a ring that transforms him physically and, with both good and bad results, mentally. The cast of characters play their parts well, particularly main character Russell, as he transforms from fearful and nervous to more confident and sure, and his nemesis, Eddie, as he takes the opposite path. Fast paced and full of adventure, this production is sure to please.
Publisher's summary
What exactly is the ring doing to him? And what price will he have to pay if he fails to follow the directions? This full cast recording, narrated by Bruce Coville himself, perfectly captures the frightfully funny, deliciously scary story that launched the highly acclaimed Magic Shop series.

Story
Prosper is the only unexceptional Redding in his old and storied family history - that is until he discovers the demon living inside him. Turns out Prosper's great-great-great-great-great-something grandfather made - and then broke - a contract with a malefactor, a demon who exchanges fortune for eternal servitude. And, weirdly enough, 4,000-year-old Alastor isn't exactly the forgiving type. The fiend has reawakened with one purpose - to destroy the family whose success he ensured and who then betrayed him.

Emmy was a good girl—too good, perhaps. The rat, whose cage sat on the counter next to Emmy’s desk, was not so good. On the other hand, he was the only one in Emmy’s class who would talk to her. The rest of the kids barely knew she existed. Even her teacher didn’t seem to know she was there! Only her nanny, the lovely-but-sinister Miss Barmy, really pays her much attention.

Oh, it's not the very cute kitten that appears out of nowhere and demands to go home with her. It's not the sudden arrival of her cousin Zee, who believes he's the cause of a mysterious sickness that has struck his friends back in England. It's not her creepy English teacher Mr. Metos, who takes his mythology lessons just a little too seriously. And it's not the white-faced, yellow-eyed men in tuxedoes, who follow Charlotte everywhere. What's so extraordinary is not any one of these things.... It's all of them.

PERFECT HALLOWEEN BOOK FOR KIDS
I own this book in a hard copy, I bought it at a book fair when I was in middle school. My mom now reads it to her first graders. It's office appropriate, light hearted, and even just a little spooky. If you have kids who like scary things, but you aren't ready to let them read things like Stephen King or R.L. Stein this is a perfect starter. It's even entertaining to adults in offices.

I still love this story as an adult.
The first time I read this was years ago when I was in 2nd grade. For years, I couldn’t find the book and was very happy to have found it here on Audible and I’m not embarrassed to still enjoy listening to it to this very day. And the performance is great! I love the full cast. Great job everyone!
