Historia
Since its publication in 1977, The Unsettling of America has been recognized as a classic of American letters. In it, Wendell Berry argues that good farming is a cultural and spiritual discipline. Today’s agribusiness, however, takes farming out of its cultural context and away from families. As a result, we as a nation are more estranged from the land - from the intimate knowledge, love, and care of it.

The writings gathered in The World-Ending Fire are the unique product of a life spent farming the fields of rural Kentucky with mules and horses, and of the rich, intimate knowledge of the land cultivated by this work.

Historia
Join us for an hour of wisdom from one of the most highly respected of modern American writers and poets. Using words like "affection", "satisfaction", "care", and "joy", Berry calls for a re-evaluation of the basic values and practices of our lives. He illustrates his ideas with glimpses of his own life and those of his Kentucky farm neighbors, and describes a future where we can learn to find love, wisdom and meaning in the people, the places and the work of our own daily lives.

Historia
Farmer, ecologist, and writer Berry provides some rich and fertile ground for recreating life and culture. He speaks of enduring values, the wholeness of life and the interdependence of all creatures, especially humankind. Berry's self-discipline, ethical sense and human compassion come through as he leads us from the microcosm of his Kentucky hill farm to the macrocosm of a sane and reasoned planetary vision based on personal integrity, faithfulness, and love.

Historia
What is our persona and how does it affect our life’s journey? What masks do we wear as we engage those around us? Our persona is ultimately how we relate to the world. Combined with our ego, shadow, anima, and other intra-psychic elements it creates an internal map of the soul. As humans, we have three names: the name that everybody knows, which is the public persona; the name of that only your close friends and family know, which is your private persona; and the name that only you know, which refers to your deepest self.

Little is known about the Ancient Greek oral poet Homer, the supposed 8th century BC author of the world-read Iliad and his later masterpiece, The Odyssey. These classic epics provided the basis for Greek education and culture throughout the classical age and formed the backbone of humane education through the birth of the Roman Empire and the spread of Christianity.

Wallace Stegner's uniquely American classic centers on Lyman Ward, a noted historian who relates a fictionalized biography of his pioneer grandparents at a time when he has become estranged from his own family. Through a combination of research, memory, and exaggeration, Ward voices ideas concerning the relationship between history and the present, art and life, parents and children, and husbands and wives.

At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Penelope Lively takes up her key themes of time and memory, and her lifelong passions for art, literature, and gardening in this philosophical and poetic memoir. From the courtyards of her childhood home in Cairo to a family cottage in Somerset, to her own gardens in Oxford and London, Lively conducts an expert tour, taking us from Eden to Sissinghurst and into her own backyard, traversing the lives of writers like Virginia Woolf and Philip Larkin while imparting her own sly and spare wisdom. Now in her 84th year, Lively writes, "To garden is to elide past, present, and future; it is a defiance of time."

Resumen del Editor
That Distant Land collects 23 stories, interlinked with each other and with the other published "Port William" novels. The stories, arranged in their fictional chronology (from 1888 to almost the present day), become one sustained work, a new novel that spans the entire life and time involved. The range of this book is extraordinary - it offers rest for the weary, hope for the beleaguered, and strength for everyone else.

Historia
In a time when our relationship to the natural world is ruled by the violence and greed of unbridled consumerism, Wendell Berry speaks out in these prescient essays, drawn from his 50-year campaign on behalf of American lands and communities. The writings gathered in The World-Ending Fire are the unique product of a life spent farming the fields of rural Kentucky with mules and horses, and of the rich, intimate knowledge of the land cultivated by this work.

Historia
Wendell Berry has never been afraid to speak up for the dispossessed. Awakening childhood memories
This book took me way back to my earliest memories. Hearing Michael Cramer read the glorious words was like sitting in the presence of my own now deceased great grandparents. A must read for all who love this earth, hold on tightly to old values and claim their community as family. 5 Stars!

Puts flesh on dried bones.
Confessing the unpardonable sin of antipathy to stories involving American history, I have to say that I could not stop listening to this compelling set of short stories, the substance of which, and the way that they were told, ushered me back into the warm presence of my now-departed Kentucky ancestors. By the first minutes of listening, the memory of sitting around a gathering of my parents, grand and great grandparents, aunts, and uncles lesser and greater sharing the comedies and dramas of their years and those preceding them was instantly resurrected, and I was among them again. Wonderful.

Loved it -- listened to it 3 times in a row
Oh, I cannot tell you how much I loved this book and the excellent narration. I do not know where Wendell Berry has been all my life, but I have already given this book to half a dozen friends who love excellent literature and they all loved it too. More will be gifted during the holidays. If you loved Our Town, guarantee you will love this one too!

Wonderful!
I loved the stories about the people. He really shows you who they are and they are real as real can be. I started to cry when it was over, just because it was over and the people went away. I wanted to hear more, to keep going. Beautiful. Enriching. Engaging.

Take me home
This story could have easily been written about my family. I laughed out loud at times, sad at others. But the writing and narration are superb. Will listen to this one again.
