Story
Many business owners are frustrated because they feel invisible in a crowded marketplace. They know they are better than their competitors, but when they focus on that fact, they get little in return. That's because, to customers, better is not actually better. Different is better. And those who market differently, win. In his new marketing book, Mike Michalowicz offers a proven method to position your business, service, or brand to get noticed, attract the best prospects, and convert those opportunities into sales.

Story
Conventional accounting uses the logical (albeit, flawed) formula: Sales - Expenses = Profit. The problem is, businesses are run by humans, and humans aren't always logical. Serial entrepreneur Mike Michalowicz has developed a behavioral approach to accounting to flip the formula: Sales - Profit = Expenses. Just as the most effective weight loss strategy is to limit portions by using smaller plates, Michalowicz shows that by taking profit first and apportioning only what remains for expenses, entrepreneurs will transform their businesses from cash-eating monsters to profitable cash cows.

In Silicon Valley slang, a "bozo explosion" is what causes a lean, mean, fighting machine of a company to slide into mediocrity. As Guy Kawasaki puts it, "If the two most popular words in your company are partner and strategic, and partner has become a verb, and strategic is used to describe decisions and activities that don't make sense"...then it's time for a reality check.

But now, everybody has a platform. The problem is that most of them are just making noise. In The Impact Equation, Brogan and Smith show that to make people truly care about what you have to say - you need more than just a good idea, trust among your audience, or a certain number of followers.

Reverb...but Great content.
I LOVE your stuff. Keep it up. But please re-record this audible book. Of all the books by you that I've listened to, this one was the hardest to stay focused. The room acoustics and reverb or echo were very distracting throughout the entire book.
Otherwise, the content is fantastic.

An entertaining and actionable read
Where does Surge rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Mike Michalowicz is one of the most entertaining authors to read his book. His passion and personality really come through. There is so much extra content and stories that I always listen to his books first, then I get the book to highlight, put in notes and actions I will take.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Surge?
The visions of surfing. Too often I view the idea of business as paddling harder instead of finding where business is going and join int.
What does Mike Michalowicz bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Mike's passion and humor really come through.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I listen at 1.5x so I was able to get it done in one glorious day
Any additional comments?
Mike has a wisdom that come through. After reading one book, you will want to read all of Mike's books.

My least favorite Mike M book. Still good though
I am a huge fan of Mike M and own all of his books. Most of them are “life changing” (the Pumpkin Plan is the best) and others are “great”. Surge however is just “good”. First off, the audio quality sounds like he recorded it in a bedroom closet. It’s not the worst thing ever but made it difficult for me to listen and it distracted from the content. The overall idea behind the Surge is spot on and great food for thought. I found the main examples he used (Ugg Boots) hard to relate to. This is probably due to personal bias and it does demonstrate a company that made bank but has since seemed to lose its momentum. I just feel it would have been more beneficial to use a variety of examples to demonstrate his point. I have a list of other criticisms about this book but essentially, if you’ve never bought a Mike M book, don’t buy this one first. You’re going to get more value out of his others. If you own his other books, you’ll probably enjoy this one.
Mike is a great narrator too. Fun to listen to and he has a great cadence to keep me engaged (but he needs to get back into a better recording studio).

SURGE is Roots and Wings for Business
I read books on business in three languages for years, but SURGE was very practical, it provided an inspiration and confidence for me, as there are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root.
In my business experience, unfortunately also nothing fails like success. In this book Mike Michalowicz explains that the significant problems you will face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking you were at when you created them.
I agree with the book author that fast runners are quick to walk, because excessive focus on quick outcome results in ruined business.
The author is teaching not to manage time or employees, but to manage yourself first. The enemy of the “best” is often the “good”, or even “better”, the good can keep you from your best, but “different” won’t. Destiny of the company is no matter of chance, it, and even the chance itself, is a matter of choice.
And Michalowicz sells Eskimos a refrigerator to keep food from getting too cold – he shows entrepreneurs the necessity of creating a new product to survive, living out imagination instead of memory.
The knowledge he shares is not impersonal, like money, for entrepreneurs it’s like a solid currency, central resource. So, I’m sure that in the long run, because he is very open and trusted, he also will be Loved by Many.
