Publisher's summary
Experience intense combat from the Crew Chief/Door Gunner’s seat in a Stinger helicopter gunship. The author presents this book based on his personal experiences in the Vietnam War as a 18-year-old gunship Crew Chief/Door Gunner. He wants the reader to experience what it is like to kill dozens of enemy combatants and collaterally, non-combatants. How to live with the frequent near-death experiences and the constant high probability of being killed. Endure the frequent loss of fellow soldiers in combat. Witness a young soldier losing all sense of humanity as he transforms into a warrior that thrives on killing.
The real life incidents portrays a platoon of Huey UH-1C gunships, called the “Stingers” and its elite, motivated crews. As a component of U.S. Army assault helicopter companies, the “guns” protected the Huey “slicks” as they inserted or extracted infantry troops from landing and pick up zones. The gunships often conducted “search and kill” missions and provided lifesaving protection to infantry units threatened by enemy forces.
Gunship crews were among the most lethal pilots, crew chiefs and door gunners in Army aviation. Some gunship crew chiefs had over 400 hundred personal kills. An intense warrior mentality was crucial to mission success and survival. Killing was a way of life in the guns.
One of the most decorated and experienced aviation combat units in the Vietnam War was the Stingers’ parent, the 116th Assault Helicopter Company, known as the “Hornets”. Follow the operational strategy as Army Command reassigns the Hornets from III Corps, near Saigon to Chu Lai in I Corps under the command of the 23rd Infantry Division, known as “Americal”. Experience the rapid increase of lethal enemy encounters. Americal imposed severe constraints on the Stingers in the aftermath of the My Lai massacre. The Stingers and slick platoons of the 116th, fight on.
The young combat veteran becomes “short” with just a few months left in his tour of duty. Americal reassigns the 116th to Quang Tri, one of the most dangerous places in Vietnam. The mission was to support the Laotian operation, Lam Son 719. Quang Tri was less than fifteen miles from North Vietnam. The rocket attacks on Quang Tri base camp were relentless. Soldiers became shell-shocked. War memories would haunt them for the rest of their lives.
The day finally came. The young warrior boards the Freedom Bird for the flight home. As the eastbound airliner crossed the border of South Vietnam, the returning soldiers break out into celebratory yells and relief. The onboard jubilation is short-lived. War damaged soldiers experience sudden decompression from the constant lethal threat endured for months on end. Soldiers begin to emotionally breakdown. The civilian flight attendants rush to calm the suffering heroes.
War news headlines are articulated in real-time to frame the author’s story.
The author portrays a balance of bravado militarism with the constant dilemma combat soldiers faced in Vietnam. It is a heroic endeavor to believe in upholding nationalistic pride and high principles of duty, honor and country. But when combat soldiers lose America’s support; when military morale and leadership falters; when the cause for war becomes questionable; a soldier has to find his own way to persevere and survive.

Story
World War II is the defining conflict of the 20th century, one that created a line in the sands of history dividing the pre-war and post-war eras. In this epoch-defining conflict lies another definitive moment: the invasion of a 50-mile stretch of coast in Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944. This battle, also known as D-Day, was the pivot point of the war in Europe. Its success led to a nearly yearlong, bloody campaign that saw the liberation of France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands, followed by the final defeat of Hitler’s Third Reich.

Story
The history of the tablets translated in the following book is strange and beyond the belief of modern scientists. Their antiquity is stupendous, dating back some 36,000 years. The writer is Thoth, an Atlantean Priest-King, who founded a colony in ancient Egypt after the sinking of the mother country. He was the builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza, erroneously attributed to Cheops. In it he incorporated his knowledge of the ancient wisdom and also securely secreted records and instruments of ancient Atlantis.

In one of Phil Mason's many revelations, you'll learn that Communist jets were two minutes away from opening fire on American planes during the Cuban missile crisis, when they had to turn back as they were running out of fuel. You'll discover that before the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon's painful hemorrhoids prevented him from mounting his horse to survey the battlefield.

How did the Wendels, one of New York’s most famous Gilded Age families, disappear from history? The Wendels built a fortune from New York real estate, and rubbed shoulders with the Astors, Vanderbilts, and Stuyvesants. But as the 19th century came to an end, the Wendel family tore itself apart. Following six years of painstaking archival research, Claire Prentice has prised open the door of the Wendels’ Fifth Avenue mansion—dubbed “the house of mystery” by the press—to reveal a fascinating and dysfunctional family imprisoned in a gilded cage.

Millions of words have poured forth about man's trip to the moon, but until now few people have had a sense of the most engrossing side of the adventure: namely, what went on in the minds of the astronauts themselves - in space, on the moon, and even during certain odysseys on earth. It is this, the inner life of the astronauts, that Tom Wolfe describes with his almost uncanny empathetic powers that made The Right Stuff a classic.

THE SCREAMING EAGLES IN VIETNAM 1970: the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne have been in combat against the elusive Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army for nearly seven years. In this memoir, author John G. Roberts tells the story of the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, the "Widow Makers" of the 101st Divisions' 1st Brigade. Written in the often crude language of the combat infantryman, Roberts describes what it was like to confront the enemy during close combat in the triple-canopied jungles of I Corps, west of the Song Bo River. As part of Operation Texas Star, the 502nd ...

Story
Struggling to reassert control over their Indochinese colonies after World War II, the French established a huge air-land base in the valley of Dien Bien Phu. But when the opposing Vietnamese People's Army (VPA) began massing its forces against the base in late 1953, French commanders seized the opportunity to draw their elusive enemy into a decisive set-piece battle. Defending a series of fortified positions which were reliant upon a single airstrip for reinforcement and resupply, the French troops quickly discovered that they had underestimated their enemy.

Story
Courage Under Fire is the first book published about Operation Lamar Plain. After fifty years, the story of the renowned 101st Airborne's major offensive near Tam Ky, South Vietnam, remains largely unknown. Fighting at Tam Ky by the 1st Brigade began 15 May 1969 while the 101st's 3rd Brigade battled on Hamburger Hill. The political consequences of Hamburger Hill's high casualties caused Lamar Plain and its high casualties to remain classified and undisclosed. Decades later, the fighting at Tam Ky is mostly forgotten except by those who fought there.

AND THUMP is Scheffel's chilling account of ground combat of a young company-grade officer who fought with the 9th Infantry Division in North Africa, Sicily, France, Belgium, and Germany. Scheffel vividly recalls the terror, mind-numbing fatigue, raw emotions, and horrific conditions fighting men endured to achieve victory in World War II.

Nicknamed "Mini-Man" for his diminutive stature, a mere five-foot-three and 125 pounds in his flight boots, chopper pilot Ron Alexander proved to be a giant in the eyes of the men he rescued from the jungles and paddies of Vietnam. With an unswerving concern for every American soldier trapped by enemy fire, and a fearlessness that became legendary, Ron Alexander earned enough official praise to become the second most decorated helicopter pilot of the Vietnam era. Yet, for Ron, the real reward came from plucking his fellow soldiers from harm's way, giving them another chance to get home alive.

Story
The Viet-Nam War for America began in 1964, and finally ended in 1975. Nearly 59,000 Americans died, over 300,000 were wounded, and in total, almost 3,000,000 served "in-country." Combat was usually short-lived skirmishes, ambushes, and some longer sustained battles such as Dak To, Khe Sanh, and the 1968 Tet Offensive. No matter where you were stationed, there were always potential hazards to be faced. Allied forces faced not only an armed guerrilla population, but many "natural" hazards to one's health. Every American who served in Viet-Nam and came home after the end of their tour brought...

Story
Over 12,000 helicopters were used in the Vietnam War, which is why it became known as "The Helicopter War". Almost half of the helicopters, 5,086, were lost. This memoir describes first-hand the harrowing experiences of helicopter pilots and crews in combat operations, from the far South to the DMZ, including the infamous Ashau Valley, Hamburger Hill, LZ Airborne, and others. 19 Minutes to Live illustrates the incredible courage and determination of helicopter pilots and crews supporting those heroes that carried a rucksack and a rifle in Vietnam.

Pretty standard ‘Nam memoir fare
Author and content: The book was decent enough. As far as style, content, etc. it’s more or less your average soldier in Vietnam type of stuff with various interesting vignettes. Fairly early on you realize the authors tour of duty affected him deeply and as the chapters go on that comes more and more to the forefront. I don’t know that I would go through the book a second time, but I don’t regret reading it the first time. It’s worth a listen/read if you’ve got some free time, especially if you got it on sale like I did.
Narration: Appropriate for the subject matter. Narrators voice kind of complimented the material. As with most audibles, this book was better listened to at ~2x speed because of how slow the regular narration is. Narrator talking speed is my only major complaint and that’s a consistent grievance of mine across just about every book on here that I’ve listened to. I really wish publishers would quit padding out the listening time and just have narrators talk at a normal pace.

Good book with a few issues with Virtual Voice
I really liked the book. It was interesting to follow the Author through his training and tour in Vietnam. I have a lot of respect for our troops that served there. Someone needs to do a little quality control checking on the Virtual Voice narration of the book. Several times (Chapter 17, 20, etc) the narrator says “The narration with pause for 60 (or 20) seconds and then there’s a dead spot in the narration for that length of time. Also, there were some very long pauses at the end of chapters, where I thought my device had stopped working. Hopefully someone can address these issues and upload a clean copy of the narration since it is actually a good book to listen to.

Unvarnished account
Allen recounted his life in combat in a straight forward unapologetic style. The primary fault of this tragedy in my opinion lies squarely with LBJ and his advisers. God forbid that we ever repeat this lethal hubris.
