Publisher's summary
This program is read by the author.
An inspiring memoir of a young man who discovered he was going completely deaf just at the moment he’d fallen in love for the first time.
As a child, Matt Hay didn’t know his hearing wasn’t the way everyone else processed sound—because of the workarounds he did to fit in, even the school nurse didn’t catch his condition at the annual hearing and vision checks. But by the time he was a prospective college student and couldn’t pass the entrance requirements for West Point, Hay’s condition, generated by a tumor, was unavoidable: his hearing was going, and fast.
A personal soundtrack was Hay’s determined compensation for his condition. As a typical Midwestern kid growing up in the 1980s whose life events were pegged to pop music, Hay planned to commit his favorite songs to memory. He prepared a mental playlist of the bands he loved and created a way to tap into his most resonant memories. And the track he needed to cement most clearly? The one he and his new girlfriend, Nora—the love of his life—listened to in the car on their first date.
Made vivid with references to instantly recognizable songs—from the Eagles to Elton John, Bob Marley to Bing Crosby, U2 to Peter Frampton—Soundtrack of Silence asks listeners to run the soundtrack of their own lives through their minds. It’s an involving memoir of loss and disability, and, ultimately, a both unique and universal love story.
A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press.

Experience a bold take on this classic autobiography as it’s performed by Oscar-nominated Laurence Fishburne. In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

Story
In weeks after the September 11 attacks, 18-year-old Mansoor Adayfi was kidnapped by Afghan militia and sold to US forces for bounty money. After months of interrogations, he was sent to the US military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, as one of its first prisoners. Like the nearly 800 other men imprisoned at Guantanamo, Adayfi didn’t know why he was imprisoned or for how long. He had never seen a skyscraper and couldn’t imagine what the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center looked like, much less how they were destroyed.

Story
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name. Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.

He grew up with full vision, but starting in his teenage years, his sight began to degrade from the outside in, such that he now sees the world as if through a narrow tube. Soon—but without knowing exactly when—he will likely have no vision left.

The prompt seemed simple: Race. Your Story. Six Words. Please Send. The answers, though, have been challenging and complicated. In the twelve years since award-winning journalist Michele Norris first posed that question, over half a million people have submitted their stories to The Race Card Project inbox. The stories are shocking in their depth and candor, spanning the full spectrum of race, ethnicity, identity, and class. Even at just six words, the micro-essays can pack quite a punch, revealing, fear, pain, triumph, and sometimes humor.

Wow! An incredible book read by the author ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Matt Hay's audiobook is a masterfully crafted narrative that stands out among the hundreds I've listened to. The author's personal touch, reading it in his own voice and accentuating each section with renowned music lyrics, adds a poignant layer to the experience. Hay's bravery shines through as he shares his story, touching on relatable themes from hearing loss and navigating the frustrations of disease. This book resonates deeply with many, offering coping mechanisms and inspiration to thrive despite challenges. I loved this book and will undoubtedly revisit it; a solid 10 out of 10. Highly recommended and worthy of multiple listens.

A story of bravery & love
One doesn’t even consider the impact of losing one of their senses, until it happens to them or a family member. My brother was profoundly deaf, my husband very hard of hearing, so I read Matt’s story from a position of great empathy. His hardships were described with depth of emotions and determination to overcome the mighty obstacles underscored by a soundtrack of songs.
I found myself pausing the playback so I could warble the song he referenced. Such a pleasure to listen to this young man’s account of perseverance and success in life.
Good on Matt!

Gripping, informative and heartfelt
Matt tells his story, and I don’t want to stop listening to it. I teared up hearing him talk about his wife, I laughed with him, I learned more about NF2 and the practicalities of living in a quiet world, and I wanted to create a new Spotify playlist. It’s well-written and hits all the right notes.
