That’s what Bran had promised Kat—and made her promise him. Which was their shorthand for, “Let’s stop killing people”.
But that’s easier said than done when your friend is a hybrid: part human and part mutated apex predator.
On the run from their former lives in Northern California, Bran and Kat find themselves in the Oregon wilderness, searching for a place to call home—a place where they can escape their past, with people that will accept Kat for what she is.
So it seems like a miracle when they stumble across an old monastery, now housing a single woman and five boys–five hybrid boys.
But “Miss Shay” has one rule: absolutely no violence.
The reason behind this rule is doubly hard to live with. In fact, it’s downright dangerous: The father of those five hybrid boys is the alpha male of a pack of primals—human beings whose DNA has been radically mutated by a plague, turning them into hyper-aggressive predators. And this alpha male doesn’t like the threat to his dominance posed by those boys.
Patrick Beckley has been hunting that alpha male for years. He knows that the only way humans will survive on this planet is if they eradicate every single primal. And this particular alpha male—massive, with a cruel streak unusual even for primals—was the one that killed his daughters.
So when Patrick stumbles across a monastery that appears to be harboring young primals, he doesn’t care that they might be half-human. They’re a threat to the human species.
As Bran’s hopes for a peaceful life fall apart, and fragile territorial boundaries erode, he learns that his promises might be harder to keep than he’d thought.
Because in order to protect the ones you love, and have a home in a world gone mad...well, sometimes you have to kill.

In a steel-and-lead-encased bunker 20 feet below the basement level of his house, a soldier waits for his final orders. On the surface, a plague ravages the planet, infecting over 90% of the populace. The bacterium burrows through the brain, destroying all signs of humanity and leaving behind little more than base, prehistoric instincts. The infected turn into hyper-aggressive predators, with an insatiable desire to kill and feed. It’s been three years since Lee Harden emerged from his bunker into a world gone mad. Governments have fallen. And new ones have taken their place. In the United Eastern States, Lee and his team of battle-hardened operatives walk a tightrope of survival, keeping their fledgling society safe from the creatures beyond their gates - and from the enemies within. Then, an ambush in hostile territory reveals a traitor in their midst - and leaves Lee barely clinging to life. Wounded and on the run, Lee and his team race to uncover the leak before it’s too late.

Story
Ten years after the collapse, Huxley has built a good life again. He has a loving wife, a farm with fields of golden barley, and a daughter with a strange and wonderful gift. Then the slavers come. Working out in the fields during the attack, Huxley returns too late. His daughter has been taken, and his wife is bleeding out, her last whispered words about a man with a scorpion tattoo on his neck. Where do the slavers go? Huxley has no idea. He knows only that they head east, and so will he, setting out on foot across the desert of the Wastelands.

Story
In the beginning, the gods destroyed the world. Five hundred years later, things haven’t gotten much better for humans. The demigods that were left behind to guard over humanity have been using them as fodder for an endless civil war between themselves, and the humans just go on dutifully slaughtering each other, battle after battle. It’s not all bad, though. Perry McGown makes his living off those bloody, stinking battlefields. He works on a crew that reclaims all the spent shell casings. But if anyone found out that he was a deserter from the war, he’d be executed for heresy.

Story
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Story
In a steel-and-lead-encased bunker 20 feet below the basement level of his house, a soldier waits for his final orders. On the surface, a plague ravages the planet, infecting over 90% of the populace. The bacterium burrows through the brain, destroying all signs of humanity and leaving behind little more than base, prehistoric instincts. The infected turn into hyper-aggressive predators, with an insatiable desire to kill and feed. Someday soon, the soldier will have to open the hatch to his bunker, and step out into this new wasteland, to complete his mission....

It’s been three years since Lee Harden emerged from his bunker into a world gone mad. Governments have fallen. And new ones have taken their place.

Excellent, but misleading
When they put "The Remaining" on the cover, they put "universe" really small and in black. I don't know if most people even made out "universe", I know I did not. So I purchased this thinking it was an extension of The Remaining series. It really is an extension of the Lee Harden series.
That said, it was still an excellent book. I loved all those series anyway. Christian Rummel is perfect for this series.

killer Combo
Much like the duo of Bran and Kat, D.J. Molles and Christian Rummel are a killer combo. Molles ever expanding "The Remaining" world is brought to life with Rummels distinct voices, giving life to a population trying to survive and maybe grow and rebuild. This world and all those in it keep evolving..... in every since of the word. This is another non stop, can't put it down from molles and will be looking forward to more from this dynamic duo.

Sanctuary Sprints to the Action
Another win for DJ Molles. While Molles' undead have mutated from the mindless, stumbling, walkers that they started out as into fast moving, smarter, ape like "Primals" he has ratcheted up the action and pace. In this one off, spin off, with a few known characters, its all well done, decisions make sense and the story is frantic and entertaining. Another great add to the world of the Remaining.

Really enjoying the continuation of the Remaining universe
So I’ve been reading The Remaining series since the first book was published and have loved this series. When the second part of the series “The Lee Harden series was published” the author took a HUGE detour from the theme and feel of the other books. It got very dark and depressing. I love the post apocalyptic genre, but I stick to series where there is hope that good overcomes evil. The Lee Harden series was just one big series of death and destruction and I honestly hated the evolution of Lee Harden’s character.
This book goes back to the spirit and feel of the original “Remaining”
Series and I love it! DJM does an excellent job of drawing you into some of the secondary characters from previous books. I’m very excited for the next book!
