Publisher's summary

One of the most accomplished and outspoken actors today chronicles the highs and lows of his life in this beautifully written, candid memoir.

Over the past three decades, Alec Baldwin has established himself as one of Hollywood's most gifted, hilarious, and controversial leading men. From his work in popular movies, including Beetlejuice, Working Girl, Glengarry Glen Ross, The Cooler, and Martin Scorsese's The Departed, to his role as Jack Donaghy on Tina Fey's irreverent series 30 Rock - for which he won two Emmys, three Golden Globes, and seven Screen Actors Guild Awards - and as Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live, he's both a household name and a deeply respected actor.

In Nevertheless, Baldwin transcends his public persona, making public facets of his life he has long kept private. In this honest, affecting memoir, he introduces us to the Long Island child who felt burdened by his family's financial strains and his parents' unhappy marriage; the Washington, DC, college student gearing up for a career in politics; the self-named "Love Taxi" who helped friends solve their romantic problems while neglecting his own; the young soap actor learning from giants of the theatre; the addict drawn to drugs and alcohol who struggles with sobriety; the husband and father who acknowledges his failings and battles to overcome them; and the consummate professional for whom the work is everything. Throughout Nevertheless, one constant emerges: the fearlessness that defines and drives Baldwin's life.

Told with his signature candor, astute observational savvy, and devastating wit, Nevertheless reveals an Alec Baldwin we have never fully seen before.

A Five Star Memoir!

I've always enjoyed Alec Baldwin as an actor and his memoir "Nevertheless" immediately appealed to me, as I have always been interested in his rise to fame, and in some ways, somewhat interested in his life and those oh so public events that have shaped many movie goers' impression of him including me.
Baldwin sets the record straight on a few things, one most impressive, is that he has been sober for over 30 years, contrary to what readers may find in the tabloids. I was unaware of this.
What I also found, unlike many memoirs I have listened to or read, he interprets his life through a lens of retrospection, providing the listener/reader with his own personal observation and understanding of the events which he defines as changing the course of his life. Its almost like a book of lessons.
This book is definitely worth a listen. Narrated by Baldwin himself, he throws himself behind revealing some messy truths in his life, and with a great deal of self-deprecation, honesty and admissions, he provides a truly interesting capsule of his rise to success, his addictions, his trials and tribulations, and an open and candid view of the business of acting, TV and movie making. If one is looking for revelations, gossip or tabloid journalism, this is not it. Instead, he takes you through a thoughtful view of his family life on Long Island, his eventual rise to stardom, some of his proudest work, along with many admission of failures and stumbles along the way., and his attempt to understand why it happened.
Baldwin does not write maliciously about those who have brought him strife, nor does he attempt to shift blame in any way to those who have harmed his career or personal life. Refreshingly, he attempts to provide the listener with an understanding of his role in those events, and what responsibility fell on him.
Baldwin walks a very fine line in the regard of calling any one out in his book, but what he does do elegantly, is write. I was most impressed with his style in which he narrates like he acts. Natural, open and inviting. It was a pleasure to listen to him talk about those actors he admired, why he admired them and those who had helped him craft his acting chops along the way. The plethora of fine actors and actresses he has come to know, is illuminating, and brings a dimension to the book which is not only interesting, but also a look into the inside life of one of the most prolific movie actors of our time. What he didn't write about much were his brothers and sisters to any great degree, the assumption being that he wanted to focus this book on his life as narrowly as he could, and perhaps retain a degree of privacy for his famous brothers and his sisters as well. There is little discussion in his book about his brothers, but he writes very simply about his sister Beth, in the context of her involvement in their Long Island family life, mostly as it relates to Baldwin's relationship with his mother and father. Baldwin loved his mother and father, and he writes about his relationship with both of them in a way which is as raw as you can get. He is able to take you into his boyhood home and unravel the story of struggle, hard times, and dysfunction. He idolized an almost absent father who with his own unrealized dreams, gave all he could to his family as he worked tirelessly to provide for.
I am totally impressed with this book, it maintained my interest right to the very end, and I have a new found respect for Baldwin, his intellect, and his ability to write a great memoir about his life. Highly recommended.

What a voice

What a pleasure listening to Alec’s voice. The story is quite interesting and enjoyable. The only times it felt long was when he was recited laundry lists of people he didn’t like.

The book is at its best when he is talking about people he admires. It’s at its worst when he talks about those he does not.

His life, his story

First I love Alec's voice and would listen to any book he would narrate.

I am a fan of TLC as well and always enjoyed when he was a host and guest of TLC. His information on actors and films are wonderful. I love to hear about behind the scenes info. Alex in his book shared his knowledge of other actors/actresses. His praise of other artist's talents and works is appreciated.

Alec is very candid about his life and work. It is never easy to share your life with others. You open yourself up to being judged for your mistakes. He has not always been a prince in his life and I think most of us would have to admit we have not been prince/princesses ourselves. I think it is always best to tell it as it is especially from yourself - it's your story after all. Thank you Alec.

It is nice to hear that Alec finally meet and married a wonderful woman. His new family life sounds great. As well as his relationship with his first daughter. I am glad to hear that this relationship is good. Alec was very brave to open up about his challenging divorce and admit his own wrongs in the journey.

I loved hearing about his early life about his mom and dad. Obviously this was not a perfect family but a 50s family. I can relate to this time period. There was much love and lots of challenges in his family relationships.

Thank you for sharing your life Alec.

I wanted more

this is one of those books you hate to finish. I especially liked the parts where he talked about working with other actors and what it's like to work in the "business "

Well done

Really enjoyed Baldwin's memoir and narration. I often laughed out loud and found overall entertaining. Last chapter or so fell off however and probably could have done without. A must have for any fan or anyone that likes to read about lives.

Pleasantly Unexpected

I have to say… I was incredibly, and pleasantly surprised with how insightful and well thought out this book was. I have an all new respect for "Alec" Baldwin. I found this book creatively poised amongst one of my favorites for 2017. I have already shared it as a gift to a few of my friends out of state. When I say pleasantly unexpected… It's a kind way of saying THANK YOU to Alec for having taken the time to put your emotions out there publicly and showing the world that you are more than just a pretty face on TV. I applaud the offer for his insightful views on many topics. I've already started listening to this a second time! I recommend this to anybody :-)
