Publisher's summary
A timid traveler. A New Orleans adventure. A Mardi Gras murder.
Roxy believed that life never gives you more than you can handle. But when she's fired from her wage-slave job, bullied by her co-workers, and her boyfriend abandons her, she decides she’s handled quite enough. Eager for a change of scene, Roxy, with her white Persian cat Nefertiti, head off to New Orleans.
The exotic sights, smells, and food of Mardi Gras coax the shy young woman out of her shell. Booking a room at a rundown guesthouse, Roxy is surrounded by a colorful cast of local characters. From tattooed waitresses to mystical tarot card readers, she quickly makes new friends and leaves her old life behind.
But she soon discovers that the Big Easy isn’t all beignets and jambalaya. A wealthy developer is eager to buy the guesthouse where Roxy lives and tear it down… until he turns up dead as a doornail! Is this anxious adventurer up to the challenge of solving a murder? Or will she become the killer’s next victim?

Story
It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

Buckhead isn’t a place you live, it’s a place you survive. And that applies even to the wealthy housewives that have it all. Fancy cars, designer clothes, and daily salon appointments aren’t nearly enough to keep them fulfilled and happy. Because in this town, privilege and opulence go hand in hand with betrayal and revenge. Jenny, the owner of Glow, an exclusive membership-only beauty salon, knows that better than anyone, because she knows everything about these housewives—down to each individual strand of hair.

Life Decisions
I enjoyed the first book in the "Roxy Reinhardt Cozy Mystery" series. Roxy's life was in turmoil as her boyfriend had moved out without telling her, and she wasn't sure whether she still had a job or not. Roxy decided to travel to New Orleans to see if the change in scenery would help to clarify her thinking about what to do with her life. While in New Orleans, Roxy was drawn into a murder investigation. The story was entertaining. I liked the quirky characters and the cat named Nefertiti. I enjoyed the setting as New Orleans during Mardi Gras seemed like a beautiful place to visit, and the descriptions added realism to the story. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. Marissa Pistone's narration was great, and her performance enhanced the story's entertainment. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

Great start to a new series
Roxy’s life is suddenly turned upside down when she loses both her job and boyfriend. On a whim, she packs up her clothing and her cat and heads for New Orleans. This mystery is skillfully written with a tight plot and great characters. There are multiple story lines within this cozy mystery and they are all neatly tied up with a bow. The narration was very enjoyable and I look forward to future audiobooks. I received this book free and chose to make a voluntary, unbiased review.
