Nel paese di Val Blabla, attraversato dal fiume Borbottiglio, crescono gli alberi letterieri, su cui in primavera sbocciano le lettere. Proprio come le persone, le lettere nascono con un loro carattere, creano amicizie (le sillabe), vanno a scuola dove imparano, commettono errori, crescono fino a diventare parole.
A quel punto devono decidere il loro futuro: una poesia, una storia d'avventura, un manuale di ingegneria, il discorso di un presidente? La cosa più importante è non finire a Sparolacchio, dove le parole sono trattate malissimo, gridate una sopra l'altra, storpiate, usate per offendere e fare del male.
