Davide comincia a frequentare di nascosto le lezioni del padre di Nicolas, che ha messo su una scuola clandestina.
E cosí l'analfabeta figlio di un fascista impara a leggere e scrivere grazie a un ebreo. Davide, Teresa e Nicolas esplorano insieme la campagna intorno al paese, fino alle Ciampate del Diavolo (la credenza popolare dice che sul versante del vulcano spento vi siano impresse le impronte del maligno), ma anche il mondo inespresso dei loro sentimenti. Il fantasma di Nicolas accompagnerà Davide negli anni a venire, a Napoli dopo la guerra. Quando lavorerà duramente in fabbrica, quando comincerà per caso a frequentare una compagnia teatrale, quando - ormai uomo, un altro uomo - calcherà il palco come attore acclamato. Sarà proprio Nicolas, vivo eppure cosí simile a un fantasma, a ricondurlo a Tora, là dove tutto è iniziato.
