No one would accuse 11-year-old Caddie Woodlawn of being dainty and ladylike. In spite of her mother’s best efforts, Caddie is as wild as the wind, playing freely and rambunctiously with her two brothers in the Wisconsin backwoods. There are rafts to build and trees to climb and pranks to play. Caddie especially likes to watch her friend Indian John build birchbark canoes at the river. Every day seems wide with possibility - as wide as the frontier. But living on the edge of civilization has its risks, too....

Three orphan girls. A pair of pink slippers. A lifetime in the spotlight. Hear the classic that has captivated generations!

Story
A country girl named Polly is visiting city friends and comes to realize that this world is quite different than which she has left. Here people are judged according to their dress and manner of speech rather than for their honesty and hard work. Yet all who meet Polly cannot help but be enamored of her; her sweet simplicity is unlike any that they have ever seen, and soon everyone comes to realize that Polly is not someone to be laughed at and ridiculed, but someone to put upon a pedestal for failing to become willing prey to the cynicism of the times.

Story
This heartwarming fictionalized autobiography tells the story of what it is like for a little girl to be growing up in an unfamiliar place. While other girls her age were enjoying childhood in America, Jean Fritz was in China in the midst of political unrest. During this time, foreigners were becoming more and more unpopular, and evacuation at a moment’s notice was imminent. Although Jean appreciated the beauty of China - the mountains, the countryside, the sea - she knew she belonged in America and longed to make her home there.

Terpsichore can't wait to follow in Laura Ingalls Wilder's footsteps...now she just has to convince her mom. It's 1934, and times are tough for their family. To make a fresh start, Terpsichore’s father signs up for President Roosevelt's Palmer Colony project, uprooting them from Wisconsin to become pioneers in Alaska. Holy unanticipated occurrences! It begins, as the best superhero stories do, with a tragic accident that has unexpected consequences. The squirrel never saw the vacuum cleaner coming, but self-described cynic Flora Belle Buckman, who has read every issue of the comic book Terrible Things Can Happen to You!, is the just the right person to step in and save him. What neither can predict is that Ulysses (the squirrel) has been born anew, with powers of strength, flight, and misspelled poetry - and that Flora will be changed too.

I had been a little concerned that perhaps the audio version would not live up to the book. I need not worried, the narrator and the producer did full justice to Noel Streatfield's words. This audiobook will become a permanent part of my library.

Such a wonderful story! I’ve read it again and again, since I was little, each time enjoying the narrative and characters even more! Elizabeth Sastre is a terrific narrator too, all the voices she does are great. For ballet lovers and performers this is such a treat, but I hope others will enjoy its humor too!

Absolutely delightful in every way
As a family with 4 girls, we all loved this book. The story was funny and intriguing (we still say, "We vow!) and the performance was outstanding, especially in the way the reader played every part distinctly and believably. The 4 stars for the story is because it took a bit getting into--but it was well worth it.

I loved this book and read it several times as a child. It's just one of those "nice" books. Like Little Women or Anne of Green Gables, it's not exciting, and maybe it's not a "grown up" classic, but the characters and journey of the story are worth reading. I've read Ballet Shoes once or twice as an adult and it definitely holds up. I ended up very involved in theatre through high school and college, so perhaps this book is why, and reading Ballet Shoes over again now makes ...more I loved this book and read it several times as a child.
