Resumen del Editor

All John Rain wants is to get out of the killing business. But with his discretion, his reliability, and his unique talent for death by "natural causes," no one is willing to let him just retire. So when an old nemesis from the Japanese national police force comes to him with a new job - eliminate Murakami, a killer even more fearsome than Rain himself - Rain knows he can't refuse. Aided by an achingly desirable half Brazilian, half Japanese exotic dancer he knows he shouldn't trust, Rain pursues his quarry through underground no-holds-barred fight clubs, mobbed-up hostess bars, and finally into the heart of a shadow war between the CIA and the yakuza. It's a war Rain can't win, but also one he can't afford to lose - a war where the distinctions between friend and foe and truth and deceit are as murky as the rain-slicked streets of Tokyo.

Wish there were more stars to give.

Barry Eisler not only has serious chops as a writer, his narration skills are on par with Scott Brick. Finding this series of audio books has been like Christmas in March.

First author

In 20 years have never found the author of their book capable of quality narration...
Until now my # one narrator was Lou Diamond Phillips...
You are authentic, talented, able to wear many hats...GREAT JOB!

Engaging, instructive, and a bargain!

Among the best series I've read or listened to. Notice how inexpensive they are.

I wrote an enthusiastically positive and extended review for Book 1: "Clean Kill in Tokyo."

Eisler is a smart and accomplished guy. Checkout his website and his Wikipedia bio.

Shows Great Knowledge of Japan

I have read, "listened on Audible" to a number of Barry Eisler books and have found them all to be well written, interesting, fast moving, and well narrated by the author himself. I am truly amazed by the author's knowledge and familiarity with Japanese society, I have only seen a similar knowledge of Japan in James Clavell's "Shogun" and Arthur Golden's "Memoir of a Geisha". This particular book was written in 2003, so it is a bit dated in some respects, nonetheless the various characters and places in the story are well developed and memorable. I only gave it four stars because the book seemed to lack some of the depth of his later books, but it definitely is worth reading.

Series gets better

I enjoyed book 1 in the series but A Lonely Resurrection was a step up. The tie to the characters was more compelling in this installment. I normally listen to Audible when I go on long walks with my dog, and I looked forward to advancing the story every day. I look forward to the next book!

Excellent new series

This is the rare case when the author is also an exceptional narrator. He not just tells a good story with a fascinating character, but provides a rich sense of environment and attitude.

A talented writer and narrator

Rarely does a great writer ALSO make a terrific narrator. Barry Eisler is the best in the business in both regards. This series is brutal, honest and incredibly well written. The John Rain and Livia Lone series are about as real as it gets in the world of modern intrigue, murder and espionage. Get the first book and you'll be hooked!

Issues in Japan

good insight into the issues that Japan is struggling with today and how they compare with the issues in other developed countries around the world.

John Rain-A Complicated Killer

I think this might be my favorite John Rain book so far, out of the 2 prequels, #1 and #2. I'm not sure why, exactly. John is a tragic figure, but if I hadn't read the prequels, I don't know that I would have wanted to continue after #1 to get through # 2 (plus I actually started Barry Eisler's books with a LATER one that includes John and several associates, then read the Livia Lone books, so my interest was well and duly piqued). The writing is great, although I find it fairly easy to get lost in some of the Japanese names and places sometimes, but the descriptions of the cities, neighborhoods, culture and politics is fascinating. If you want to have to think a little while having action and intrigue, read these books. Note that there is a bit of romance and it does seem to be somewhat formulaic, but since human beings ARE pretty formulaic in the repetitive nature of their entanglements, it tends to make sense. Definitely worth the read/listen. If you like audiobooks, I highly recommend these, since they are read by the author himself, so you know it is being delivered as written.
