Publisher's summary

Gifted thief Romeria has flourished from her days as a street kid pilfering wallets to survive. Now she thrives, stealing jewels from the rich under the involuntary employ of New York City's most notorious crime boss. But when an enigmatic woman secures her services at swordpoint, Romeria is plunged into a startling realm of opposing thrones, warring elven, and elemental magic she cannot begin to fathom.

Her quest is straightforward: Steal a stone from Islor's sacred garden without anyone discovering her true identity, which would earn her certain death. But the identity she has inexplicably assumed is that of the captured Ybarisan princess - an enemy to Islor after she poisoned their beloved king and queen on the day she was to marry the prince.

Her betrothed, the newly crowned King Zander, detests her with every grain of his handsome being. Zander gives her a choice: life in a cell or an acquittal of all charges in exchange for her help in exposing the growing plot against him.

Romeria sees no other option and embraces the tricky role of smitten queen-to-be until she can escape. As she digs deeper, she discovers monstrous truths that could spell ruin for all.

Solid fantasy romance

🌶️-1.5/5
📕-4/5
🎧4/5
A fast paced, fantasy, romance reminiscent of ACOTR. Solid world building and character development with a consistent mix of spice and action. It could fall into the YA category, which I normally avoid in favor of smut and erotica 😉. However, no regrets and I look forward to book 4.
This series (4th book not yet released) doesn’t break the mold but the author’s writing style makes it a captivating read.
The author keeps the rambling, internal, monologues at a tolerable level and the pacing is excellent, consistent with other works by this author. Knight’s Wolf Hotel series is one of my favorite contemporary, extra spicy, romance series.
One irritating similarity of both series are the FMCs. Depicted as rational , intelligent, women they frequently become impulsive airheads as a cheap way to move the story forward. This writing method is DEFINITELY not unique to the romance genre but is extremely annoying.
The narration is solid. No complaints.

great story, grows on you narrator

I really REALLY enjoyed the story… the action and surprises! when i first started the book i didn’t think I was going to be able to listen to the narrator. Her voices for the characters were great and while she was in conversation it was great…. BUT when reading just the story in between the conversations was robotic and so annoying. i almost gave up 2 chapters in but someone told me to stick it out and it would get easier and that person was right!!! eventually i stopped caring about those in between parts bc the voices and story was great!
so…. when you think you just can’t get passed it, give it a few more chapters… get to at least chapter 5 or 6 and i promise you begin to not notice it! LOL

Robotic Narrator

I like the story, it was nice and drawn out and left on a cliffhanger. My only “complaint” would be that the narrator is a bit robotic. That being said, she has a really nice take on the Scottish accent.

Last half is the best

Honestly, it got me in the last half. Didn’t think I was going to enjoy it as much as I did.

book is very enjoyable, narration is bland

wish i had read instead of listened - please don’t continue with this robotic, lifeless narrator (she improves while reading other characters’ pitches/accents, but as the main character’s internal monologue she was intolerable)

Should have read instead of listened

This absolutely surprised me! Love the idea of simple time travel, main character awakening new powers and of course enemies to lovers. The narrator wasn’t the best. She was very robotic and bland. Her voice was so blahhh it almost ruined the book!

Magnificent story

The reader is probably one of the worst so definitely speed up so it doesn’t sound so robotic. It was still hard at times to understand what “person” the story was being told in due to her monotone.but stick with it.

KA is one of my new favorite writers. Im so glad she wrote this romantasy! Totally different than her other books but she created wonderful word building to magnify the worlds. Loved the slow burn from Romy and Xander and the villain in Atticus. Cannot wait to read the next ones!
