Looking back, they called those turbulent times simply The Troubles.

Others claimed the period of death and war began with the Republic's action on Psydon. Still, others pointed to the Republic's forced migration of the zhee or even the arrival of the Mid-Core Rebellion, culminating in victories against the Legion at Kublar and the genocidal atrocities extending as far as Rhysis Whan.

But no matter when they began, the galaxy-shaking events of The Troubles were well remembered by those who suffered through them, and the scars of those upheavals would leave their indelible mark for years, and perhaps lifetimes, to come.

The brazen and open government corruption infesting the former capital planet of Utopion.

The arrival of the tyrant Goth Sullus, who briefly united opposition to the Republic before falling prey to the vanity of the title…The Emperor.

The Legion's invocation of Article Nineteen of the Republic Constitution, which brought an all-consuming flame to a simmering cold war that had long been stewing between the rulers and those forced to fight their needless wars.

The sudden unexpected attack by an alien race known as the Cybar. Relentless. Cruel. Inhuman in the extreme.

And finally, the long-planned return of a tribe of lost Savages, led by their messiah…the Golden King.

The Troubles. A quaint name for a horrific period in the galaxy's history. A period whose atrocities were superseded only by the terror of the Savage Wars that had come before. Almost no corner of the galaxy was spared a taste of terrible war, cutthroat intrigue…and remorseless death.

In the aftermath, this battered galaxy now longs for peace and stability. The Republic, now reformed, seeks to govern by the rule of law. But no matter how sincere the reform, how earnest and well-meaning the ruler, some worlds refuse to place their destiny in the hands of others. Ever again.

Been there. Done that. Got burned along the way.

Because some things never change. Power summons would-be tyrants eager to seize it. Ancient vendettas cry out to be settled. Corruption worms its way through the souls of men too weak to resist it or too wicked to try. And dead-eyed killers gather in all the usual starports, awaiting the opportunity to do what they do best for the promise of a quick credit.

Through it all, the silent Legion waits for its cue to once more tread upon the stage and break its enemies through nothing more and nothing less than total violence of action capably applied. As though this time… things will be different.

Like Lucky Charms Without The Marshmallows!

Whenever they change voice actors I cry inside. It is like eating a bowl of Lucky Charms without the Marshmallows. It is edible but but missing the Joy.

Great first season 3 episode

Didn’t know where else the story would go, but this seems a very interesting direction.

Also enjoyed Mark Boyett’s narration. He’s a great addition to the team who has given voice to these stories. I’ll always think of RC Bray first due to shear volume and quality of his work. But Mr Boyett’s narration style didn’t take me out of the story at all.

Passing the torch.

As most everyone else has noted, this one is not narrated by RC Bray after the opening monologue. From what I gather, he's had health issues that have severely impacted his recording schedule.
I like the passing of the torch from one narrator to another, though I hope Bray returns in the future, and it seems to fit well with the transitional nature of this book.

This book probably could have been listed as season 2.5 and no one would care that it was narrated by someone else. it also would have fit the placement of the story as the was a framework developed, but the bulk of the story was spent in Keel/Wraith's early development timeframe. it was a fun ride, as always, but it didn't really move us far along our new course.

Boyett did a great job with narration. Bray is, in my opinion, literally the best in the business and he's had years to develop the voices of these characters in this universe. That's a very hard act to follow.
Everyone seems to take issue with the choice of a bucket voice for the lead characters when in armor. I think if it was slightly less stilted it would be an awesome stylistic choice. The books make a point of noting the intimidating vocals produced by the helmets, but this is the first time a narrator has really tried to embody it. I think with a bit of refinement it will be a great addition if used going forward.

I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Love the authors RC Bray intro fading into the new guy (haven’t learned his name yet)… great work!

Good story. Didn't like the performance.

Good addition to the story, as always. Although the jump in the time line made me feel like I missed a book.

I don't think Mark Boyett is a good replacement for R. C. Bray. Boyett is an excellent voice actor, but I feel that his voice just doesn't work for this storytelling of hard/rough characters that are almost all military, bounty hunters, and space pirates.

One thing I did like about his performance is his ability to keep females from sounding weak and whiney, and thats about it for this performance.

Quite the beginning to a new season

Well that's for sure a beginning I want to keep reading. Too bad it ended with soooo many new questions. Cannot wait for the rest of the Season!!

Where’s RC Bray?

Great story as always. The voice actor and his performance was great but, not what I expected or needed.

RC Bray is sorely missed

A very welcome return to this series. As someone who thought the series was finished I was quite happy to see its return. I thought Season 3 is off to a great start with this book.

However, RC Bray is sorely missed. We have had an narrator change once in the passed and I think it really hurt that book as well (Can't remember if it was Ray Porter or Mark Boyett the last time). I think Boyett did a fine job for the most part and I enjoy his narration in other books, but I cannot stand when pronunciations are wrong with the Zhee and Enshakaar being the most prominent. Furthermore, I was not a fan of his male voices at time. It became hard to distinguish who was speaking when Keel and Zorra had their buckets on. There was multiple times where Keel, Zorra, and Doc were having a conversation and I could not tell who was saying what.

Loved it but way too short!

Another great addition to this collection of stories. I only wish it was longer and that more are released sooner. It’s really nice to hear about the adventures that made it all happen in a layered setting to make sense in the story itself and not just a prequel. Fantastic. Thank you. I’ll be waiting impatiently for more!
