Perseverance of Women

I loved the independent nature of the women in the story.
The characters were so very interesting and real .
I was very surprised by the ending ,not at all expected but so pleased with its conclusion .

Delightful

Sweet and pure. Delightful protagonist, a fun bunch of endearingly flawed characters trying to get back to life after war but struggling while still clinging to pre-war ideas. Protagonist brings it all together so that even the most devious characters find at least one redeeming quality.

Escape to 1919

Keeps you moving from one character to the next while the plot materializes.
Lots of characters all with beauty and quirkiness. At the end I am a little sad since I want to know what each of them did with their lives.

Wonderful book!

I hadn't realized that the book was written by Helen Simonson, author of Major Pettigrew's Last Stand. As with the previous book, the characters are absolutely wonderful, the plot is engaging and interesting and I only wish I could read it again for the first time. Narration was beautifully done. Highly recommend.

Changing times

I loved the well developed characters in this book, The interaction between the different generations was indicative of the changing times, as the younger generation chafed against the established norms. The motorcycle riding, trouser wearing young ladies changed the world forever. I laughed, I cried, I even giggled as I read this wonderful story of a world turned upside down.

Brave Women and the Aftermath of War

I loved the WWI setting — as it is so often lost to WWII — and the focus on women who served and the aftermath of their patriotism and sacrifices being pushed aside.

The crossover of classism, racism, and sexism is an all too constant in our society piety more than 100 years later.

Beautifully written and narrated.

An engaging premise, but somewhat disappointing.

A disappointment, surprisingly! I had found Simonson's "Major Pettigrew's Last Stand" delightful, and "The Summer Before the War" (to which I've listened twice on Audible and recommended to many friends) a work of depth, nuance, and beauty. And this narrator, Fiona Hardingham, is one of my favorites. However, this feels like a very early work, lacking the subtlety of "Summe." Further, there are just a few too many similarities between that novels heroine and the protagonist in the current title. Both are young, intelligent women whoseskills and abilities are nearly universally undervalued, and who have in the wake of their parents' passing been left unprovided for (quite inexplicably in the case of "Hazelborne"). In that regard, the premise did not feel very original, although the notion of the motorcycle service is an engaging one. Unfortunately, however, the voicing of the lead character running the club is so high pitched and strident that I actually find it unfortunate to listen to. I was really looking forward to this new novel by Simonson but may not get through it- - or may prefer to peruse it in print at a later date.

Excellent story. Excellent narration.

Love Helen Simonson’s books. This one was lovely. I could have done without some of the theatrics toward the end, but I would still read it again. A lovely piece of work. Constance is a gem.

Engrossing story, sympathetic heroine, lovely seaside setting.

The narrator, whose dialogue was fine, drove me nuts with her (non-dialogue) strange pauses which interrupted the flow of the phrase, sentence, or even two word description.

A true delight!!

My favorite genera is historical fiction…..

But I think anyone who likes a good book would love this one. It is full of detail, surprise, and lovely time…..
