We've all had experiences with two dramatically different types of leaders. The first type drain intelligence, energy, and capability from the people around them and always need to be the smartest people in the room. These are the idea killers, the energy sappers, the diminishers of talent and commitment. On the other side of the spectrum are leaders who use their intelligence to amplify the smarts and capabilities of the people around them.

Resumen del Editor
Featuring a new preface, afterword, and Radically Candid performance-review bonus chapter, the fully revised and updated edition of Radical Candor is packed with even more guidance to help you improve your relationships at work.
Radical Candor has been embraced around the world by leaders of every stripe at companies of all sizes. Now a cultural touchstone, the concept has come to be applied to a wide range of human relationships.
The idea is simple: You don't have to choose between being a pushover and a jerk. Using Radical Candor - avoiding the perils of Obnoxious Aggression, Manipulative Insincerity, and Ruinous Empathy - you can be kind and clear at the same time.
Kim Scott was a highly successful leader at Google before decamping to Apple, where she developed and taught a management class. Since the original publication of Radical Candor in 2017, Scott has earned international fame with her vital approach to effective leadership and co-founded the Radical Candor executive education company, which helps companies put the book's philosophy into practice.
Radical Candor is about caring personally and challenging directly, about soliciting criticism to improve your leadership and also providing guidance that helps others grow. It focuses on praise but doesn't shy away from criticism - to help you love your work and the people you work with.
Radically Candid relationships with team members enable bosses to fulfill their three core responsibilities:
- Create a culture of Compassionate Candor.
- Build a cohesive team.
- Achieve results collaboratively.
Required listening for the most successful organizations, Radical Candor has raised the bar for management practices worldwide.

They actually have vastly different styles and backgrounds. Yet despite their differences, great managers share one common trait: They don’t hesitate to break virtually every rule held sacred by conventional wisdom. They don’t believe that, with enough training, a person can achieve anything he sets his mind to. They don’t try to help people overcome their weaknesses. And, yes, they even play favorites. In this longtime management bestseller, Gallup presents the remarkable findings of its massive in-depth study of great managers.

Most people who want to get better—at hitting golf shots, negotiating with clients, delivering presentations, or any other field of endeavor—seek out new information. They read a book, take a class, hire an expert tutor. But as Alan Fine has learned from many years of coaching athletes and businesspeople, this “outside-in” approach often doesn’t produce the results people want. More information becomes a distraction rather than a solution, and high performance remains elusive.

Great read but needs a pdf companion
Great book and interesting insights I found highly relevant to my current role. Lots of actionable advice I can immediately put into practice. Only negative was there were several tables or diagrams that were read aloud instead of being in an accompanying pdf. Reading a table aloud was totally useless and disengaging. I would have preferred a pdf to go look at as the associated section was read.

An annual read
I was recommended this book and didn't finish it soon enough. That had the impact of me not enacting, holistically, the deployment of Radical Candor for my team before it was dissolved. This book did help me finish the role strongly, and the managers reporting to me and I have all grown because of it despite being a bit too late for full effectiveness.
Read this book annually to re-up your memory of what you should be doing for your team. Think of it as your meta-hygiene around how to deploy the hygiene of feedback. If fast feedback is like brushing your teeth, as Scott states, and performance management is the dental cleaning, then rereading this book is like going to your annual industry conference as a dental hygienist, to stay sharp in applying the work office-wide.
Thank you, Kim Scott, for another highly effective 2x2 matrix!
