Resumen del Editor

Easy Company, 506th Airborne Division, U.S. Army, was as good a rifle company as any in the world. From their rigorous training in Georgia in 1942 to D-Day and victory, Ambrose tells the story of this remarkable company, which kept getting the tough assignments. Easy Company was responsible for everything from parachuting into France early D-Day morning to the capture of Hitler's Eagle's Nest at Berchtesgaden.

Band of Brothers is the account of the men of this remarkable unit who fought, went hungry, froze, and died, a company that took 150 percent casualities and considered the Purple Heart a badge of office. Drawing on hours of interviews with survivors as well as the soldiers' journals and letters, Stephen Ambrose tell the stories - often in the men's own words - of these American hereoes.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"A first-class explanation of what crack infantry troops are like....Addicts of military history will relish its finely detailed account.....Stephen Ambrose's thorough research and clear organization have produced a highly readable account of the heroic service of this "band of brothers" he so unstintedly admires." ( San Francisco Chronicle)
"As a member of just such a unit...I am impressed by how well Mr. Ambrose has captured the true essence of a combat rifle company." (The New York Times Book Review)
"A valuable and fascinating record....In these pages, the reader can vicariously walk with the men of E Company, suffer and laugh with them." (The Times-Picayune)

5 Stars for Everything Except the Narrator...

This book is one of the best I've ever read, so I gave it 5 stars. If you haven't seen the mini-series on HBO, read this and then immediately go watch that. It really helps bring the book to life since there are so many characters. My only complaint, and it's a huge one, is the narration. It's like the narrator had a competition with himself to see how many people's names and locations he could mispronounce. Even if this was recorded before the show, it would have taken the tiniest amount of research to figure out how to pronounce everyone's names. It's super distracting. I recommend giving reading the book a shot if you think that would drive you crazy too.

great first hand accounts

my son is an army airborne soldier currently in ranger school at ft benning. i listened to this book to feel closer to him and also as a distraction. my grandfather was also a paratrooper, so many times my thoughts went to him and the connections. this was a great account of history and it was interesting to see what has changed in the army and what has been improved upon since the men of easy company learned lessons the hard way.

Well read but...

This is a very well known book, much discussed and covered. I really enjoyed the book and came in with rather high expectations for the audio version.

The story line is excellent and the overall performance of the speaker was satisfactory. What stopped this from getting 5 stars across the board was the readers horrendous pronunciation of the soldiers names. It would have expected the reader to do his research on how to pronounce "Toye" as "Toy" and not pronounce the last vowel. Further, wild Bill "Guarnere" is pronounced "gar-near" and not "guar-near-e" are two of the most glaring annoyances. Especially after watching the series and numerous interviews.

Pronouncing Words

What made the experience of listening to Band of Brothers the most enjoyable?

I've read this book and many spin offs written by members of Easy Company, watched the miniseries dozens of times. The story is unforgettable and never gets old. There's always new pieces of information that I hadn't noticed before that peak my interest and lead me down research rabbit holes for hours. Great to have on in the background while doing chores or while out for a walk.

What other book might you compare Band of Brothers to and why?

Beyond Band of Brothers: The War Memoirs of Major Dick Winters

Brothers in Battle, Best of Friends

Easy Company Soldier: The Legendary Battles of a Sergeant from World War II's "Band of Brothers"

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Several times, repeatedly.

Any additional comments?

The narrator was alright. He could have done with a refresher on pronouncing names and locations before recording this. He goes way overboard in trying to pronounce some French and Dutch locations to the point that you cannot understand what he's saying since he's gurgling so much saliva in the back of his throat. Without fail, any name or location that ends with an "e", he throws a "nyə" sound onto it. Examples: Bastogne (he pronounces it "Bas-ton-yə"), Guarnere ("Gwan-yə-ree"), Toye (Toy-ə). It's a minor complaint, but it digs at you after a while.

Loved It

Would you consider the audio edition of Band of Brothers to be better than the print version?

Audible is asking me if I had read this book. I did not read this book. I did watch the HBO movie "Band Of Brothers". In fact I have watched that movie multiple time. Years later I can now say that I have listened to the audio version and was not disappointed. This is also not my first Stephen Ambrose audio book. I listened to Citizen Solider. You really get a sense of what these men had to go through. I would recommend this to anyone interested in World War II history and specifically the 101st Airborne.
