En 1916, en plena Primera Guerra Mundial, llegan a Cádiz dos barcos con más de seiscientos alemanes provenientes de Camerún. Se han entregado en la frontera guineana a las autoridades coloniales por ser España país neutral. Se instalarán, entre otros sitios, en Zaragoza y formarán allí una pequeña comunidad que ya no volverá a Alemania. Entre ellos estaba el bisabuelo de Eva y Fede, quienes, casi un siglo después, se encuentran en el cementerio alemán de Zaragoza en el entierro de Gabi, su hermano mayor.
