Story
Welcome to the Barkley Marathons, a fever dream of an ultra event, inspired by a prison break, heralded by a conch blast, paid for in cigarettes and socks, and completed only by a select few. A race in which competitors haul themselves up mountains, through extreme weather conditions, beyond pain and exhaustion, mile after mile. Completed 60 miles? That’s just the fun run. In the Spell of the Barkley is a story of sporting obsession, exploring what drives individuals to challenge themselves at the limits of what is possible – and what it takes to succeed.

Publisher's summary
Whether you're an experienced runner or a complete beginner, this inspiring book will motivate you to train your body and mind to complete one of the hardest physical feats of all—an ultramarathon
Ultra-races—distances longer than 26.2 miles—aren’t for “normal people.” Normal people have jobs, families, or a million other obligations that do not exist in the world of ultrarunning. Or that’s what Sid Garza-Hillman thought as he faced the starting line of his first 50K.
But the more he learned about the sport, the more he realized that ultrarunning is for more than elite athletes: moms, dads, grandparents, young people, old people, people with full-time jobs, and others successfully cross the finish lines of ultra-races around the world every year.
In this book, Sid distills the life lessons he's learned from the trails—as a ten-time ultramarathoner and Race Director of the Mendocino Coast 50K—to teach you how to:
- Move through the fear and mental blocks that prevent you from reaching your goals—on and off the trail
- Slow down and be present in a world full of endless distractions
- Test your mettle and prove you’re stronger than you ever knew
- Commit to a well-rounded—but realistic and adaptable—training plan
Not your typical ultramarathon training guide with rigid schedules and prescribed workouts, this book powerfully outlines the invaluable struggles, benefits, and life lessons that await anyone who dares to dive into the world of ultrarunning.

If someone were to ask Jasmine Santos to describe the last few years of her life with a single word, it would definitely be a four-letter one. After 17 years - and countless broken bones and broken promises - she knows her window to compete in figure skating is coming to a close. But when the offer of a lifetime comes in from an arrogant idiot she's spent the last decade dreaming about pushing in the way of a moving bus, Jasmine might have to reconsider everything.

These deeply-ingrained habits lead them to make mistakes. The problem is that these situations won't often arise at the table by chance - you have to make them happen. Exploitative Play in Live Poker is a ground-breaking work that teaches you how to create the circumstances where your opponents will be likely to blunder and how to exploit them when they do.

Story
Deena Kastor was a star youth runner with tremendous promise, yet her career almost ended after college, when her competitive method - run as hard as possible, for fear of losing - fostered a frustration and negativity and brought her to the brink of burnout. On the verge of quitting, she took a chance and moved to the high altitudes of Alamosa, Colorado, where legendary coach Joe Vigil had started the first professional distance-running team. There she encountered the idea that would transform her running career: the notion that changing her thinking - shaping her mind to be more encouraging, kind, and resilient - could make her faster than she’d ever imagined possible.

Mostly Worth the listen
As a “normal person “ who’s done at least 25 ultra trail races I can say most of the information is pretty good. I appreciate the reminder of remembering to not over train. However, the nutrition information is useless and you should disregard or ignore it. The author is a true believer in plant based nutrition which has been proven over and over to be very unhealthy. Do your own research on the best nutrition practices for humans. You’ll discover as I did that plant based diet is a con and will ruin your health.
