Story
The Earl of Wrexford possesses a brilliant scientific mind, but boredom and pride lead him to reckless behavior. He does not suffer fools gladly. So when pompous, pious Reverend Josiah Holworthy publicly condemns him for debauchery, Wrexford unsheathes his rapier-sharp wit and strikes back. As their war of words escalates, London's most popular satirical cartoonist, A. J. Quill, skewers them both.

Story
Twenty-six-year-old Beatrice Hyde-Clare is far too shy to investigate the suspicious death of a fellow guest in the Lake District. A spinster who lives on the sufferance of her relatives, she would certainly not presume to search the rooms of her host's son and his friend looking for evidence. Reared in the twin virtues of deference and docility, she would absolutely never think to question the imperious Duke of Kesgrave about anything, let alone how he chose to represent the incident to the local constable. And yet that's exactly what she does.

He finds a world ruled by strict manners and social customs, where the inhabitants of the Ellison's neighborhood appear to be more outraged by the thought of scandal than they are by murder. Inspector Pitt finds a most unlikely ally in Charlotte, the Ellison's spirited daughter. But as the murders continue, Charlotte and Pitt find themselves drawn together by more than the investigation.

Story
London, 1894. Albertine Honeycombe never wanted a husband and certainly not the one with fifteen children that her cousin, Aubrey, is trying to marry her off to. She reinvents herself as Countess Von Dagga, a private detective aiding the upper echelons of women in society. As the Countess, she is a married woman, with a conveniently absent husband who doesn’t exist, which allows her far more freedom than being single. When Lord Grendel, from whom she has recovered blackmail letters, is murdered, Albertine is suspect number one—having been the last person to see him.

Interesting mystery but missing that flare
I enjoyed the mystery but was left wanting more from the book. For me, it didn't merit being called "Regency." Except for a mention of the war with France and the Princess Charlotte's wedding and people riding around in carriages, there were few other details to bring the Regency to mind. Captain Lacey was also an odd character. His self recriminations often seemed more feminine than masculine in tone. For an army man, I thought it odd he never cursed. What little sex there is is implied rather than seen, which is a nice change of pace. I was amazed to see a reviewer on Amazon say she was going to delete the book because of its overt sexuality. I'm not sure we were reading the same book. The narrator is fine but I gave him only three stars because of Lacey's over the top, screechy dialogue.

Wonderful Story-Perfect Narration
Great narration, great story. Captain Lacey and all the characters are so likeable. The mystery is well done leaving you wanting and waiting for another Captain Lacey adventure.

Not what I was searching for, but what I’m glad I found
I came across this title while searching for something light-this is not. The reviews warned me of this, but they intrigued me more than the publisher summary and I’m glad I gave it a chance. I followed a flawed, but honorable, Captain Lacey through a Regency England that felt real and gritty while the plot covered a topic that some may find disturbing (the atrocity of human trafficking). The supporting characters were well developed and I was drawn in by the little tidbits of Captain Lacey’s character which was reveled slowly as the story progressed. There were a few sex scenes, but personally, I didn’t find them to be at all explicit, as one reviewer stated. I’ve already downloaded book 2.
