Story
Systemic Shame is the socially engineered self-loathing that says we are solely to blame for our circumstances. It teaches that our consumption is moral and personal choice is our only tool of change. Systemic Shame tells us that poverty is remedied by hard-working people pulling themselves up by their bootstraps, that marginalized people are responsible for their own oppression, and that massive global crises like climate change can be solved by switching to paper straws. When we inevitably blame ourselves for failing to do enough to combat structural injustices, we feel Systemic Shame.

Paige Layle was normal. She lived in the countryside with her mom, dad, and brother Graham. Autism—that’s being able to count matches really fast and knowing that 7 August 1984 was a Tuesday, right? Well, no. In this book, Bianca Toeps explains in great detail what life is like when you’re autistic. She does this by looking at what science says about autism (and why some theories can go straight in the trash), but also by telling her own story and interviewing other autistics.

No one understood her behaviour, her meltdowns or her intense emotions. She felt like everyone else knew a social secret that she hadn't been let in on, as if life was a party she hadn't been invited to. Why was everything so damn hard?

Awareness- Inclusive - Informative - Relevant - Relatable
I am a late diagnosed autistic with adhd. This book is a treasure for me and my spouse. Well into my fifties, my new understanding of my experience has changed my coping mechanisms significantly. This book allows me to gain clear insights into taking a personal inventory, become curious about what works, and respond to the world around me in a way that is supportive. I no longer feel completely isolated and this book has helped me understand myself more deeply.

Inclusive, respectful, and accessible.
Dr. Neff's book goes broad and deep. It's inclusive of a variety of experiences, while respectful of the multilayered complexity of any individual's experience.
I first read the Audible edition, and found it very accessible in audio form: not too list-y or diagram-filled to follow and absorb.
Nevertheless, I decided I wanted to have it on paper, also, to refer to and flip through. So I bought the hardcover edition. It's well-organized so it's easy to use as a handy reference, and small enough to keep on hand, in an emergency kit, say, so, double-handy!
