Historia
Pompeii was a lively resort flourishing in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius at the height of the Roman Empire. When Vesuvius erupted in an explosion of flame and ash, the entire town would be destroyed. Some of its citizens died in the chaos, some escaped the mountain’s wrath . . . and these are their stories. Six authors bring to life overlapping stories of patricians and slaves, warriors and politicians, villains and heroes who cross each other’s paths during Pompeii’s fiery end. But who will escape, and who will be buried for eternity?

Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th-century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trades she uses to get by - palm readings, zars, and a mysterious gift for healing - are all tricks, both the means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles and a reliable way to survive. But when Nahri accidentally summons Dara, an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior, to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to reconsider her beliefs.

Alexander's beauty, strength and defiance were apparent from birth, but his boyhood honed those gifts into the makings of a king. His mother, Olympias, and his father, King Philip of Macedon, fought each other for their son's loyalty, teaching Alexander politics and vengeance from the cradle. His love for the youth Hephaistion taught him trust, while Aristotle's tutoring provoked his mind and Homer's Iliad fuelled his aspirations.

Fantastic plot, not so great performance
The storyline of this book is great, especially towards the end: gripping! However, about half the book is from a male perspective. I think that they should have had a male narrate that portion since it was such an extensive portion of the book and the female narrator did not do a great job impersonating male characters. Also, the female characters in this book are strong and regal. The narrator made them sound ditzy. My opinion is to read the book rather than listen as the audible does not do it justice.

Disconcerting
Whoever decided that casting a women to narrate a gladitorial male must have been very fond of the narrator and had no fondness for their story. The narration was so out of keeping with the character as to be wildly disconcerting. I might try reading the story as I was unable to really decide if the story was, by itself, interesting.

Thoroughly Enjoyable
I usually listen to my audible books as I fall asleep but this was so interesting that I found it difficult to go to sleep to and often extended the timer.

Such an engrossing read
I loved everything about this book. Best of the series, even though I also enjoyed the first 3. Just a ride through history that was captivating and engrossing. Great narrator and I just love this author.

Too Long. Dragged
Long complicated story. Actual history interesting but trying to weave multiple characters into years of Roman history and all their stories back and forth sometimes got confusing Characters like Vix seemed muddled. Hero? OK tough soldier but unable to manage personal relations. Just does what he's told. Limited conscience. Was indifferent to most characters. For me, the only interesting one was Haradian with all mental/emotional issues. I'm a history buff and just reading history books about him is more interesting than this book.
