Resumen del Editor

New York Times best-selling author of The Good Girl Mary Kubica returns with an electrifying and addictive tale of deceit and obsession.

In downtown Chicago, a young woman named Esther Vaughan disappears from her apartment without a trace. A haunting letter addressed to "My Dearest" is found among her possessions, leaving her friend and roommate, Quinn Collins, to wonder where Esther is and whether or not she's the person Quinn thought she knew....

Meanwhile, in a small Michigan harbor town an hour outside Chicago, a mysterious woman appears in the quiet coffee shop where 18-year-old Alex Gallo works as a dishwasher. He is immediately drawn to her charm and beauty, but what starts as an innocent crush quickly spirals into something far more dark and sinister than he ever expected.

As Quinn searches for answers about Esther and Alex is drawn further under the stranger's spell, master of suspense Mary Kubica takes listeners on a taut and twisted thrill ride that builds to a stunning conclusion and shows that no matter how fast and far we run, the past always catches up with us in the end.

Terrible Narrators....Just Terrible

What did you like best about Don't You Cry? What did you like least?

The Narrators RUIN this book. I read on others similiar reviews and one where the woman drove them nuts. For me it was the man "Alex", I kept tuning out. He was pretentious, dry, and didn't get the essence for the 18 year old kid that he was supposed to be reading for. Story is good, but this is one I wish I would have read.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Kate Rudd and Kirby Heyborne ?

Anyone but Kirby Heyborne. Who has a nice voice. Just really missed the mark on this one. Specifically when he goes into detail. I vividly remember him describing Pear and her Ombre hair. They way he said Ombre immediately struck a nerve. Like you're supposed to be an 18 year old boy.

Six hours in and so bored.

I'm praying for an amazing twist somewhere in this book, but so far I'm just flustered and bored.
Here's to hoping this slow moving book picks up the pace soon....

Also. The male narrator is pretty annoying. Weird pauses. Too theatrical.

Would the Real Mary Kubica Please Stand Up?

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I can't get this book out of my head. Not because it was good, it was terrible. The novel is repetitive. It has endless, mind-numbing detail and description of places and people that don't matter to the plot. It throws in fancy words just to see if you're paying attention. Did I mention it's repetitive? Does the person who wrote this book think we're stupid? She treats us like we are. This is not a thriller. At the end, I couldn't have cared less what happened to the characters. They were bland and annoying.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Don't know

Did Kate Rudd and Kirby Heyborne do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Just okay.

Could you see Don't You Cry being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

God no!

Very slow

I didn't care for this book. For the first seven hours I kept wondering when something was going to happen, the two stories never connect until the last hour.

Okay

The male narrator’s voice put me to sleep. Felt like the book was slow. Overall, thought it was just okay.

Great nail biting story.

Great book. Not at all how I thought the story would pan out. Fabulous narration by Kate Rudd and Kirby Heybourne

judge it for yourself

mild spoilers ahead...

I read all the reviews, all of them. people either fell in love with this one or absolutely hated it. I can see both reviews being the case.
It was an easy to predict plot, once a few key details were put into place. The people who said the male narrator read like a high school drama overachiever, I disagree completely, but he did definitely help me fall asleep most nights. Despite the slow soothing voice, he fit well with the character and wasn't annoying in the least. The story itself came together in the last few pages like a whirlwind, way too fast and left a few strings unattached.
Alex's fate was unnecessary, the cheese factor of Ben's last scene was frustrating. The fact that Quinn goes around thinking she's the center of the universe and the only reason Esther is missing is to get revenge on her for a few minor reasons is just impossibly naive. How could she not be more concerned or in tune with the fact that someone was trying to kill Esther?
It did keep me interested, maybe in hopes that Ben would have the guts to tell Priya the truth about where he was for once, and maybe that Alex would leave his no good father to his own ruin and take advantage of his intelligence to make a better life for himself, but not so much could be said for the main plot.
So yes, the book was frustrating but I don't regret reading it. It not Mary Kubica's best book for sure I'd say the worst that I've read of hers, but its not the worst book I've ever read and not even close to that ranking.

Frustrating character choices

I found myself annoyed and frustrated by the choices the main characters made. I hated the ending. Hated it.

Like nails on a chalk board

The narrator is SO ANNOYING. Her voice is terrible, she forgets when she is speaking as herself and uses a male impersonation, and the way she over-enunciates is maddening.

Also, the love story seems to be tacked on as an afterthought, and with the author's obsession with how "rare" it is to have ombré hair, it seems a bit dated.
