Story
Conventional accounting uses the logical (albeit, flawed) formula: Sales - Expenses = Profit. The problem is, businesses are run by humans, and humans aren't always logical. Serial entrepreneur Mike Michalowicz has developed a behavioral approach to accounting to flip the formula: Sales - Profit = Expenses. Just as the most effective weight loss strategy is to limit portions by using smaller plates, Michalowicz shows that by taking profit first and apportioning only what remains for expenses, entrepreneurs will transform their businesses from cash-eating monsters to profitable cash cows.

Publisher's summary
What if the real key to a richer and more fulfilling career was not to create and scale a new start-up, but rather, to be able to work for yourself, determine your own hours, and become a (highly profitable) and sustainable company of one? Suppose the better - and smarter - solution is simply to remain small? This book explains how to do just that.
Company of One is a refreshingly new approach centered on staying small and avoiding growth, for any size business. Not as a freelancer who only gets paid on a per piece basis, and not as an entrepreneurial start-up that wants to scale as soon as possible, but as a small business that is deliberately committed to staying that way. By staying small, one can have freedom to pursue more meaningful pleasures in life and avoid the headaches that result from dealing with employees, long meetings, or worrying about expansion. Company of One introduces this unique business strategy and explains how to make it work for you, including how to generate cash flow on an ongoing basis.
Paul Jarvis left the corporate world when he realized that working in a high-pressure, high profile world was not his idea of success. Instead, he now works for himself out of his home on a small, lush island off of Vancouver, and lives a much more rewarding and productive life. He no longer has to contend with an environment that constantly demands more productivity, more output, and more growth.
In Company of One, Jarvis explains how you can find the right pathway to do the same, including planning how to set up your shop, determining your desired revenues, dealing with unexpected crises, keeping your key clients happy, and of course, doing all of this on your own.

Over and over, we've watched our fellow entrepreneurs succumb to the mental toll and chaos of running a business. We've also experienced it firsthand as we've launched and grown our own businesses.

Industries disappear, job descriptions change, and people's interests and passions evolve. The key to riding this wave, entrepreneur James Altucher advises, is to constantly be curious about what's next, to be comfortable with uncertainty so you can keep navigating the rough waters ahead, and most importantly, to pursue the things that interest you.

Being a good person and a good salesperson aren’t mutually exclusive. The Unsold Mindset will change the way you think about selling and the way you think about yourself.

a must read for small business owners!
When I started the book, I didn't quite know what to expect. The book is narrated by Paul Jarvis, who also wrote the book, which is typically what I like to listen to because who knows the emphasis written in the book better than the author themselves? I will say that Paul is a bit of a choppy reader, and being a self-described introvert and socially awkward, I would expect that. however the book is filled with case studies, poles, and tons of research which give the reader plenty of examples that support Paul's claim to the risks of over expansion. if you're debating on whether or not to read this book, because you're not sure if the material is quite what you're looking for, by the book. You will not be disappointed.

Very Insightful!
I was recommended this book to help change my mindset on business. The book does a fantastic job of presenting the idea that business doesn't have to be a large infinitely grow company. It can be a simple one person operation that focuses on customer base and a handful of other factors.
Excellent book, I highly recommend.

Actuation was odd
The book is read with a lot of odd pauses. Like the sentence was going to end, but it doesn't.
Content was great. A fresh view on how to approach growth in business.

Wow.
This book is packed with nuggets of wisdom. It questions some core cultural idealogies and behaviors that most of us take for granted (that growth and greater financial hain should always be pursued), and holistically looks at business in the context of the rest of life.
I read a lot of business books but this is one of those mindset shifting, rewire-your-brain ones. And all written / read in an approachable, conversational tone. I'm gonna be recommending this to pretty much anyone remotely interested in business.
