Publisher's summary

"My life, as you will read, has taken me from one cult to another. BRAVE is the story of how I fought my way out of these cults and reclaimed my life. I want to help you do the same." (Rose McGowan)

A revealing memoir and empowering manifesto - a voice for generations

Rose McGowan was born in one cult and came of age in another, more visible cult: Hollywood.

In a strange world where she was continually on display, stardom soon became a personal nightmare of constant exposure and sexualization. Rose escaped into the world of her mind, something she had done as a child, and into high-profile relationships. Every detail of her personal life became public, and the realities of an inherently sexist industry emerged with every script, role, public appearance, and magazine cover. The Hollywood machine packaged her as a sexualized bombshell, hijacking her image and identity and marketing them for profit.

Hollywood expected Rose to be silent and cooperative and to stay the path. Instead, she rebelled and asserted her true identity and voice. She reemerged unscripted, courageous, victorious, angry, smart, fierce, unapologetic, controversial, and real as f--k.

BRAVE is her raw, honest, and poignant memoir/manifesto - a no-holds-barred, pull-no-punches account of the rise of a millennial icon, fearless activist, and unstoppable force for change who is determined to expose the truth about the entertainment industry, dismantle the concept of fame, shine a light on a multibillion-dollar business built on systemic misogyny, and empower people everywhere to wake up and be BRAVE.

Includes two original songs by Rose McGowan.

A MUST Read

This is a poignant account of what it’s like to be a woman today, maybe always. Rose McGowan delivers her personal narrative of abuse, abandonment, childhood trauma, domestic violence, sexual exploitation, molestation and rape in an intelligent, articulate voice. But she also delivers a scathing review of the patriarchal society in which we find ourselves, and it cuts like a knife, enticing us, empowering us to be BRAVE. It’s a call for all women to stop catering to what society wants, to what others tell us we have to be, to find our own voice and to just be ourselves. Congratulations to Rose McGowan for deciding to be the author of her own life. She has set fire to Hollywood stereotypes and galvanized a movement for women to come farther, for all people to think deeper and be better! #inspiring

Extremely Candid, Thoughtful

I only leave reviews when I can give a heartfelt full 5 star. This was an extremely enjoyable listen. For an author-delivered audiobook- the performance was so good.. no awkwardness, emotion when it was needed, cut/dry when it helped. Any other reader would have been inappropriate.

While I don't fully agree with all the political stances this author holds- I now understand a little better why she holds them. I also see that this human acknowledges that she is an ever-changing work in progress, as we all are. Refreshing from a Hollywood-ite.

It has taken immense bravery to tell this story, and to LIVE the life she believes is right. Rose, I am now a fan- your creativity and artistry is truth.

New Respect for Rose McGowan

In the past, images of Rose McGowan would conjure a feeling inside me. Feelings of my own inadequacy because of her beauty because hollywood and advertising would like me to believe I am less than, because I don't rise up to this impossible standard. But also a feeling of distrust stemming from my assumption she gained her fame as a less than honorable starlet. I didn't relate to the TV shows where she and her costars wore revealing clothes, I wasn't interested in her acting career because I didn't think she had a brain. I never considered her backstory (or any other hollywood woman for that matter), as I examined her body, and her face underneath scathing headlines over the years. With this book, she has single handedly shattered my perception of not only her fame, but hollywood. Holy cow! I didn't know she was in an Indy film and had a promising career in that genre. Now I'm piecing together other stories I've heard about the politics of hollywood on up to the politics of well, politics. Thank you Rose for being a brave soul to take a stand and tell your story. I had my husband listen to it as well. I now consider myself part of the Rose Army! ~ Consider yourself fist bumped girl!

Raw and amazing

Rose McGowan exposes Hollywood and herself equally in this book. Strangely, she is least impactful when she is openly advocating and most impactful when she is simply being honest about her life and about what she has witnessed the industry doing to herself and others. I am so thankful to have read her amazing memoir and I hope it reaches countless others.

I do not see a victim, she is a survivor.

I personally do not see a victim here. she has indeed been brave and stood up for herself and taken responsibility for her own actions and choices in certain places in her life. I think people went into this book with preconceived notions and those were the reviews that criticised Rose for being a man hater or not taking responsibility, etc etc. If they actually listened to her words they would see that she has taken responsibility for her poor choices and has taken steps to change her life for the better; that is the point of her telling her story. No, it is not her fault about the abuse she has suffered. That is the abuser's fault. I think she is a flawed human being telling her story to help other flawed human beings. We all have our own truth and this is hers. Keep an open mind and enjoy her journey.

if you don't agree, you're lying to yourself

rebellious, heartfelt, eye opener. just looking for equality , in life, not just Hollywood. Rose takes responsibility for her own role in the mess and how she's taking it back.
