Historia
Twenty-six-year-old Beatrice Hyde-Clare is far too shy to investigate the suspicious death of a fellow guest in the Lake District. A spinster who lives on the sufferance of her relatives, she would certainly not presume to search the rooms of her host's son and his friend looking for evidence. Reared in the twin virtues of deference and docility, she would absolutely never think to question the imperious Duke of Kesgrave about anything, let alone how he chose to represent the incident to the local constable. And yet that's exactly what she does.

The impoverished playwright has a dream to see her plays performed on stage, but in Elizabethan England, not only are women considered the inferior sex, they simply do not write plays. Faced with rejection after rejection, she decides to take one more chance with the most desperate theater manager in London, only this time she’ll use the cover of a man. Sucked in by a pair of bright blue eyes and impressive shoulders, she chooses Blake out of the crowd, never thinking he’ll actually play an active role in her ruse.

Resumen del Editor
A royal scandal’s connection to a brutal serial killer threatens London in this new Veronica Speedwell adventure from New York Times best-selling and Edgar Award-nominated author Deanna Raybourn.
Autumn 1888. Veronica Speedwell and her colleague Stoker are asked by Lady Wellingtonia Beauclerk to stop a potential scandal so explosive it threatens to rock the monarchy. Prince Albert Victor is a regular visitor to the most exclusive private club in London, and the proprietress, Madame Aurore, has received an expensive gift that can be traced back to the prince. Lady Wellie would like Veronica and Stoker to retrieve it from the club before scandal can break.
Worse yet, London is being terrorized by what would become the most notorious and elusive serial killer in history, Jack the Ripper - and Lady Wellie suspects the prince may be responsible.
Veronica and Stoker reluctantly agree to go undercover at Madame Auroreʼs high-class brothel, where a body soon turns up. Secrets are swirling around Veronica and the royal family - and it is up to Veronica and Stoker to find the truth, before it is too late for all of them.

From Italy in 1733 to Edinburgh in 1831 to a series of chilling murders in London in 1870 and a lethal game of revenge decades later, a watch touches lives with misfortune - until it comes into the hands of one young woman who might be able to stop it for good. This outstanding collaboration between four outstanding novelists follows characters who are irrevocably linked by fate, each one playing a key role in breaking the curse once and for all.

A spinster who lives on the sufferance of her relatives, she would certainly not presume to search the rooms of her host's son and his friend looking for evidence. Amazing.... AGAIN!
I have re-listened to this series 3 times, and was so happy to add this new book to my third round of listening. There is some thing so endearing about all of the characters and the way they connect to one another, obviously with Veronica and Stoker‘s relationship being the most fun. I’m looking forward to starting the series over for the fourth time. I tell everyone I can about these books, what a talented writer Ms. Raybourn is & what a spectacular narrator Angele Masters is. I found the authors note at the end to be a very sweet and thoughtful inclusion. Can’t wait for the next book in the series. Excelsior!

DELIGHTFUL Again!
As a big fan of this series, Deanna Raybourn and narrator Angels Masters, I anxiously awaited this next book and was again delighted with story, plot and the invincible independence and unwavering confidence of Victoria Speedwell and her irreverent sassiness with Stoker. Would that more young girls develop such confidence and self assurance to sally forth in their careers, relationships and life!

The quality I expect from the Speedwell Mysteries
Another excellent installment in the adventures of Veronica Speedwell and Stoker. The setting and dedication of this book had me anticipating a particular slant to the story and yet another take on the identity of the most notorious serial killer of the 19th century. However, this particular rendition gives a glimpse, not of the killer, but of the lives of his victims. Just a glimpse, and a shiver for Veronica of "there but for the grace of fortune". When our main characters encounter a certain Mary (Jane) Kelly... the scene, and the generosity of one who has so little and no reservations about sharing, is so much more achingly poignant.

Great read!
Loved it! Angele Masters is great at pulling off the persona of each character and brings them to life. Murder, kidnapping, twist and turns were not expected and kept the reader on their toes. I cannot wait to read the next installation.

Great story
Interesting story and great characters . I thought the story was over, mystery was solved and that the author was wrapping up the book. I was wrong. Yet more was in store !
