Historia
The old world is buried. A new one has been forged atop the shifting dunes. Here in this land of howling wind and infernal sand, four siblings find themselves scattered and lost. Their father was a sand diver, one of the elite few who could travel deep beneath the desert floor and bring up the relics and scraps that keep their people alive. But their father is gone. And the world he left behind might be next.

Historia
For centuries, men and women have manned lighthouses to ensure the safe passage of ships. It is a lonely job and a thankless one for the most part. Until something goes wrong. Until a ship is in distress. In the twenty-third century, this job has moved into outer space. A network of beacons allows ships to travel across the Milky Way at many times the speed of light. These beacons are built to be robust. They never break down. They never fail. At least, they aren’t supposed to.

At first, it looks like a disease. An epidemic that spreads through no known means, driving its victims mad with memories of a life they never lived. But the force that’s sweeping the world is no pathogen. It’s just the first shock wave, unleashed by a stunning discovery - and what’s in jeopardy is not our minds but the very fabric of time itself. In New York City, Detective Barry Sutton is closing in on the truth - and in a remote laboratory, neuroscientist Helena Smith is unaware that she alone holds the key to this mystery...and the tools for fighting back.

Historia
This book contains foul language and fouler descriptions of life as a zombie. It will offend most anyone, so proceed with caution or not at all. And be forewarned: This is not a zombie book. This is a different sort of tale. It is a story about the unfortunate, about those who did not get away. It is a human story at its rotten heart. It is the reason we can't stop obsessing about these creatures, in whom we see all too much of ourselves.

Living in space should be exciting and full of adventure, except it isn’t, and he fills his time hacking 3-D movie posters and holographic adverts outside the stores in the retail zone. Petty thief Yasmine Emile Dufont is also from the WS Humility, but she is not bored....

Resumen del Editor
A new collection of stories, including some that have never before been seen, from the New York Times best-selling author of the Silo trilogy
Hugh Howey is known for crafting riveting and immersive tales of boundless imagination, spawning millions of fans worldwide, first with his best-selling novel Wool, and then with other enthralling works such as Sand and Beacon 23. Now comes Machine Learning, an impressive collection of Howey's science fiction and fantasy short fiction, including three stories set in the world of Wool, two never-before-published tales written exclusively for this volume, and 15 additional stories collected here for the first time. These stories explore everything from artificial intelligence to parallel universes to video games, and each story is accompanied by an author's note exploring the background and genesis of each story.
Howey's incisive mind makes Machine Learning: New and Collected Stories an addictive and thought-provoking selection of short works - from a modern master at the top of his game.

Mad scientists have never had it so tough. In super-hero comics, graphic novels, films, TV series, video games, and even works of what may be fiction, they are besieged by those who stand against them, devoid of sympathy for their irrational, megalomaniacal impulses to rule, destroy, or otherwise dominate the world as we know it. NYPD detective Paul Donner and his wife Elise were killed in a hold-up gone wrong. Fifty years later, Donner is back: revived courtesy of the Shift. Supposedly the unintended side-effect of a botched biological terrorist attack and carried by a ubiquitous retrovirus, the Shift jump-starts dead DNA and throws the life cycle into reverse, so reborns like Donner must cope with the fact that they are not only slowly youthing toward a new childhood, but have become New York's most hated minority.

It begins as a statistical oddity: a spike in children born with acute speech delays. Physically normal in every way, these children never speak and do not respond to speech; they don't learn to read, don't learn to write. As the number of cases grows to an epidemic level, theories spread. Maybe it's related to a popular antidepressant; maybe it's environmental. Or maybe these children have special skills all their own.

Lyra's story begins in the Haven Institute, a building tucked away on a private island off the coast of Florida that from a distance looks serene and even beautiful. But up close, the locked doors, military guards, and biohazard suits tell a different story. In truth Haven is a clandestine research facility where thousands of replicas, or human models, are born, raised, and observed. When a surprise attack is launched on Haven, two of its young experimental subjects - Lyra, or 24, and the boy known only as 72 - manage to escape.

Moments later, thunder cracks the sky, but there’s no lightning. Flaming debris rain across the valley, and a dark mass goes sailing out of the clouds, headed straight for LA. This remarkable novel is the basis for the world's greatest science-fiction movie. It is an unforgettable vision of the 21st century and the awe-inspiring city of the future. Metropolis has been compared to such classics as George Orwell's 1984, H. G. Wells' The Time Machine, Samuel Butler's Erewhon, and Karel Capek's R.U.R. Science fiction writer and editor Forrest J Ackerman called it "a work of genius".

Geary believed in the Alliance. Even when he uncovered overwhelming evidence that the highest echelons of the government and fleet command were involved in secret programs and prison camps, he believed it was worth saving. He believed his duty was to see that justice was served even though some factions feared that revealing the truth would cause the Alliance to crumble. Mixed bag
Some stories were interesting, some less so. The male narrator in my opinion didn't convey emotions correctly and completely failed to capture my attention, so midway through a story I kept finding myself wondering what it was about. It could be just me, or the nature of short stories and continuously changing contexts - but I had a much easier time following along with the female narrator; as well as every other title I've listened to on Audible so far.

pretty solid
I liked it overall but my main complaint is that a lot of these short stories don't really have an ending. there's no catharsis. you listen to 3 chapters of a story then it's just done.

Solid story, easy to listen to with deep thought.
Great series of short stories with the added bonus of closure with Wool. Very easy read

Howey’s home are short stories
I was addicted to the Wool series but it does have its issues. Largely due to the short turned long form it takes. This collection - while not all platinum - is filled with a quality that wows across a range of topics. I highly recommend it with both some early winners, mid throw backs to wool and an epic number few closers.

Some Good, Some Not So Much
Some authors excel at long form stories and some are best in the short story. A few are great at both. Hugh Howey is interesting because most of his books are comparatively short, and even his most famous work (Wool) was published as a series of novellas.
This series of short works covers most of Howey’s short stories collected in one place, and as you may expect, it’s hit or miss. There are some good ones and some that miss the mark, and a few new Wool stories too. None are overly long.
While not one for the annals of Howey’s best works, it should appeal to his fans and fans of his other series.

Some good, some not for me
I found a few of the stories very thought provoking. Others I was meh on. I should say I’m not really a short story reader but am a Howie fan. I think I enjoyed his thoughts on his stories between the entries more than the stories. Found it cool as well that he read those parts himself. I’d recommend the book to short story fans for sure.

Howey Does It
An astoundingly thought provoking and imaginative collection... Most collections are hit and miss, this one is all hits... Love the unique thought processes and scenarios delivered to us w/ encouragement to consider and cogitate... Stories off center and kilter intriguing and teasing dexterous minds... You’ll wanna give some little, or large, thought once done w/ each... Some won’t like the author’s notes following each, but I dug them tremendously... Narration is very good... Fans will gobble it up, and if you’re a neophyte to the Howey creations this could be an excellent appetizer to get started on your way....

Great writing - perhaps more daring than his novels
I generally don’t like reading anthologies. The stories are too short and the jump from story to story it too jarring. I bought this book because I really like Hugh Howey’s books and believe I have read them all.
This collection is gratifyingly great. Each story progresses with intensity - perhaps with urgency to get his message across. And Hugh Howey’s always has a message. It was enlightening to read the stories that precede and succeed the Silo series. I gained valuable insights. Even more enlightening were the author’s notes at the end of almost every story. Those glimpses into Hugh Howey’s messages and morals were truly a joy.
