There has always been a darkness to Ilmar, but never more so than now. The city chafes under the heavy hand of the Palleseen occupation, the choke-hold of its criminal underworld, the boot of its factory owners, the weight of its wretched poor and the burden of its ancient curse. What will be the spark that lights the conflagration? Despite the city's refugees, wanderers, murderers, madmen, fanatics and thieves, the catalyst, as always, will be the Anchorwood–that dark grove of trees, that primeval remnant, that portal, when the moon is full, to strange and distant shores.

The sun is bloated, diseased, dying perhaps. Beneath its baneful light, Shadrapar, last of all cities, harbours fewer than 100,000 human souls. Built on the ruins of countless civilisations, Shadrapar is a museum, a midden, an asylum, a prison on a world that is ever more alien to humanity. Bearing witness to the desperate struggle for existence between life old and new is Stefan Advani: rebel, outlaw, prisoner, survivor.

Tales of the Apt is a companion series to the best-selling decalogy Shadows of the Apt (Tor UK), gathering together short stories from disparate places and supplementing them with a wealth of new tales written especially for the series. Together, they combine to provide a different perspective, an alternative history that parallels and unfolds alongside the familiar one, filling in the gaps and revealing intriguing backstories for many established characters. A must listen for any fan of the Shadows of the Apt books, where epic fantasy meets steampunk and so much more.

Resumen del Editor
Short-listed for the 2016 British Fantasy Society Award for Best Novel.
Guns of the Dawn is a pacey, gripping fantasy of war and magic from Arthur C. Clarke Award-winning author Adrian Tchaikovsky.
The first casualty of war is truth....
First, Denland's revolutionaries assassinated their king, launching a wave of bloodshed after generations of peace. Next they clashed with Lascanne, their royalist neighbour, pitching war machines against warlocks in a fiercely fought conflict.
Genteel Emily Marshwic watched as the hostilities stole her family's young men. But then came the call for yet more Lascanne soldiers in a ravaged kingdom with none left to give. Emily must join the ranks of conscripted women and march towards the front lines.
With barely enough training to hold a musket, Emily braves the savage reality of warfare. But she begins to doubt her country's cause, and those doubts become critical. For her choices will determine her own future and that of two nations locked in battle.

Magic, adventure, mystery, and romance combine in this epic debut in which a young princess must reclaim her dead mother’s throne, learn to be a ruler - and defeat the Red Queen, a powerful and malevolent sorceress determined to destroy her. On her 19th birthday, Princess Kelsea Raleigh Glynn, raised in exile, sets out on a perilous journey back to the castle of her birth to ascend her rightful throne. Plain and serious, a girl who loves books and learning, Kelsea bears little resemblance to her mother, the vain and frivolous Queen Elyssa.

The Downs, the poor district of the city of Avarest, is home to cutthroats and thieves, pickpockets and prostitutes, all of whom pay tribute to one of two powerful crime bosses. It is also home to Aaron Envelar, a disillusioned sellsword known as the Silent Blade, who cares nothing for the criminal overlords or their schemes, who only wants to survive and make a little coin. But when a group of thugs steal his mother’s necklace, the only link he has to his murdered parents, Aaron decides that sometimes gold isn’t enough - sometimes, blood is the only payment worth taking.

1870. A time known as The Great Killing. The vampire clans arose and slaughtered humanity with unprecedented carnage in the northern parts of the world. Millions perished; millions were turned into herd animals. The great industrialized civilizations of the world were left in ruin. A remnant fled south to the safety of the ever present heat which was intolerable to vampires. There, blending with the local peoples, they rebuilt their societies founded on human ingenuity, steam and iron.

Some of the parchment pages were the color of cream, thick and substantial, made to last many, many lifetimes. Other pages were thin and desiccated, positively yellow from age, and crackled alarmingly as Van Richten turned them over. There were no ornate illuminations, no fussy borders, only lines of plain text in hard black ink. The flowing handwriting was a bit difficult to follow at first; the writer's style of calligraphy had not been in common use for 300 years. No table of contents, but from the dates it looked to be some kind of history.

The sun is bloated, diseased, dying perhaps. Beneath its baneful light, Shadrapar, last of all cities, harbours fewer than 100,000 human souls. Couldn't "put it down"!
So normally I save my audiobooks for when I'm at work so that I don't plow through them too quickly and so that I'm less bored while I'm sewing. I found that to be a near impossibility with this novel. I was absolutely riveted. After work I listened any chance I had a few minutes to myself at home. The plot is intricate without being complicated; the characters - all of them - are complex and multi-dimensional. He took a traditional storyline, one that has been covered countless times through the ages, and effectively turned it completely on its head, without being showy or blatant about it. I loved it. I'm pretty sure I've stumbled over an author who's work I will actively seek out for as long as he writes.

Loved Apt Series way more
Characters not as engaging or outcome as satisfying as I found in the first four books of the Apt series. Great plots and sub plots though. Nice exploration of morals and loyalty dilemmas as experienced by soldiers and societies at war. Those who thrive on the day to day unhappy, horrific, scarring , poignant lives lived in wartime will really really like this book

Amazing standalone
I feel like it is an amazing skill to build such a rich world in one novel. This story was self contained and while I'd love to learn more of the world, I am satisfied with the ending. I also enjoyed how the main character wasn't a "chosen one", "perfect", or super powered. A believable and flawed character, but one for whom you cheer for.

Good story, not quite as good performance
The narrator has few different voices/dialects to choose from making it some times difficult to recognise who is talking.

revolutionary war, but with warlocks!
fun take on the revolutionary war, but told from the perspective of (pinky in the air) "a proper lady".
has a bit of a pride and prejudice feel, but with musket regiments and swamps

Adrian Tchaikovsky strikes again.
I like a good standalone fantasy novel as much as the next fellow. Especially in this time of unfinished trilogies(Rothfuss anyone?) & series' in general(hello G.R.R.M.). That being said, I wish this standalone novel would have had about 3 more chapters. The end seems a little abrupt, but overall this is an excellent story and a marvelous performance from Emma Newman.

The biggest flaw was that there isn't more
The book is fantastic, but absolutely would have been more enjoyable if I had the opportunity to stay in the world longer.

Spectacular!
Tchaikovsky impresses yet again! Wonderfully vast world and an equally complex story line that invokes critical thought. Every character is brilliantly designed and the voice actress performed amazingly!
